Re: OFD
Long story short. I needed something more manageable thwn the DSL40. It just didnt sound good to me unless it was through the roof loud, and the attenuator just neutered its sound and feel.
So for the past couple weeks I tried a bunch of smaller amps and a few that had effective ways to reduce volume that I had never tried or had not in some time, to see if my opinions changed.
Peavey classic20 and the mini 6505.
Orange TH30 and a used AD30
Blackstar HT20 and ID60 head.
Bugera v22 infinium
Mesa Rectoverb 25
Flat out the AD30 was my fave. The tube rectifier was just so awesome. Biggest baddest El84 amp I have ever tried. It unfortunately was over the top loud. Easily as loud as my dsl if not louder, but it did sound good at lower volumes. I was skeptical though and with no half or quarter power like the TH30, so I declined.
The rectoverb and th30 were neck and neck but both were a little to liquidy compressed and more modern toned. Aweome amps but not quite my style.
I have nothing nice to say about the Blackstar HTs. Ive tried all of them time and time again. Not my thing. The ID was another volume issue amp even with its overall master and separate channel volume. And it also sounded buzzy with a cab with typical guitar speakers. It was grest with its own speaker cab which was darker and a little compressed..whatever speakers are in there. But I have a cab, and speakers I like and want to use.
Bugera suprisngly good, but a little too smooth/flat/tame for me. Loved the two inputs, and full set of tone controls.
Peaveys- Classic20 nice...a little too chimey/bright, and that peavey pre amp grit which drives me nuts. 6505 mh had a nice crunch tone, and loved the resonance wnd presence, but just couldnt bond with it.
So for one of the very very few times in my life, I bought the exact same thing I used to have. Its not perfect, but, it sounds great, meets most of my criteria and is in my price range. Couldnt find anything else that worked as well....and yes I need a pedal board. One day....
