Well, it depends on your perspective. Hypothetically, if the court ruled that companies had to pay fees to Gibson, this would kill a bunch of companies. It would make companies like Fender go after others as well. Things would be dismal in guitar-land for quite some time. But in a way, I would welcome new designs.

A company not wishing to pay Gibson (or any other company) licensing fees would have to come up with new, original designs. This isn't ideal, but I am trying to spin what would be a bad situation into a passable one.

Unfortunately, if Gibson wins and Fender decides to get in on the action, they can probably sue 75% of the companies out there, there won't be anyone left. I think it's best if Gibson just shuts up and starts fixing their internal issues.

Oh, indeed, it would, and that would be terrible. The end result would be that there would only be giant companies producing these shapes. However, smaller companies would eventually start up that don't owe any of their designs to those big companies. That is the part that would be interesting to me.

It's those intermediate companies that would be hurt the most that generally get most of my business.

Can we just stop for a moment and reflect on how friggin' awful most of Gibson's "original" designs have been?

I mean, do their designers even have eyes? Egads...it's like they go out of their way to make things ugly.

Look at the Hendrix Strat-wannabe vs what PRS did for John Mayer. Clearly one of those companies doesn't give a sh*t about what they put out.

Half the sub-$100 knock-off crap that's been flowing out of China for the past 30 years has had more class and thought put into the look of things.

So much good wood wasted!

I was actually following this for quite a while and it was pretty funny at first, but I think after 50 it's about time to drop the stick and back away from the horse.
