Oh crap, impulse buy (Marshall content)

Not that I have the extra dough, but just impulse bought a Marshall jtm 30 combo. Well I did sleep on it first.

Fully aware of heat issues, but plan on removing the tube cage, installing a bias pot, and either a permanent fan or use a fan on it when amp is in use. Might run constant jumper on effects loop if tech thinks will help.

This one looked totally mint though! Basically one owner until a dude got it extra on a trade. Hard to pass up.

I love the sound (and size) of these, what can I say. Much smaller than my Randall (takes up half my man closet) which will probably go bye bye now. Valvestate head probably going to chopping block too, along with some other stuff.

If not as good as I remember it, I can still recoup the price I believe. Plus or minus 50 bucks.

Q: if bias pot installed can I run el34s if properly biased? Just a thought. drtube site says these sound better with 34s. Maybe he was talking about the 60 watt in that respect.

I quite liked the clean channel on these cranked all the way up. Another apparently good mod is to remove the diode clipping on the dirty channel.

Re: Oh crap, impulse buy (Marshall content)

Kinda wanted a 60 for more wattage, presence knob, better effects loop options, and el34s, but dug price and minty-ness of this 30. Plus everyone that's had one seems to have liked the sound a lot. Maybe the 60 head version is in my future, dunno.

Probably won't mess with the diodes - id take them out, then use a TS or super od with diodes anyway, may as well have em in the amp.

That thing seems to be able to get some nice sounds;

Looks very uncomfortable. Your back must be killing you. :joke:

Congrats!

Re: Oh crap, impulse buy (Marshall content)

Have you tried any OD's on it yet? I'm curious to see how it takes a little push to the front end.

Re: Oh crap, impulse buy (Marshall content)

Looks like simply dropping in 6L6s solves the heat thing (sleeper amp article, by andy brauer).

Dang 3 days and a hurricane later and no response from seller. Hope he's ok. I guess NJ got hit pretty hard, he must be affected.

I wasn't even able to pay for it until he sends me an invoice. Listing said $50 to ship in continental US, but when i wnet to pay it said I needed to change my address or request invoice.

We'll see what shakes out.

Good luck brother, I had one of the 60s years ago and I had zero luck with it....I think someone put a hex on that amp, nothing but problems....

Well this particular one may be under water for all I know, but noted.

Amp ok & in process of being shipped! Glassman to the rescue with some great advice as well. Dude knows his stuff.

Re: Oh crap, impulse buy (Marshall content)

I had the 60w 1x12 version and until it died I really liked it.

Had a really nice clean sound for a Marshall, and the OD channel was no slouch either. I used to run it with a patch cable in the parallel FX loop and use the mix knob as an extra gain stage. Was a nice way of adding a tad more push without needing an external boost.

Re: Oh crap, impulse buy (Marshall content)

Got the amp today.

Plugged in the tubes, let it warm up - sounded real nice. A little raspy on the OD side at low volumes, but not unlike youtube clips I've heard (including Jerry's above). I can dial most of the raspiness out by lowering the treble and backing off on the gain. It's got quite a growl to it.

The downside/scary part is when I unpacked it and was checking it out, there was an odd noise as if something little was loose on the inside - then as I was tilting it, a small "locking end" of a broken plastic cable tie rolled out of one of the holes from the bottom of the chassis! Not sure what that was about, but doesn't seem to affect the function of the amp.

I also noticed a couple of weird (very small) blackish pieces of something (burnt plastic?) loose in the cabinet; hard to tell what they were; maybe not even from the amp.

The amp does have a weird smell to it - hard to tell if it's an electronics smell or more of an "old house" type thing. I think I'm just hyper-sensitive to the overheating issue.

I'll probably take it to a tech eventually just to make sure all is OK under the hood, but my first impression is a nice amp for the price. It's one of those that "calls to me" to come and check it out again if you know what I mean. Some amps do that, the keepers.

While it gets sorta warm, it's not as bad as one of my EL84 amps, that one gets even hotter I've noticed.

I'll try to post up some clips soon, but I've been pretty busy.

i think the JTM30 sounded quite good.
I almost gotten it because the price was good.
But then again, I realize it wasn't the kind of amp I'm going for since it has 2 channels,
an excuse if some should say.

anyway enjoy it!
