One compromise option: used Marshall DSL50 combo or head. -That'll get you a Marshall sound with a smaller footprint. Cheap too. If you're one of those weird "I don't do secondhand" types you culd probably still find new stock out there, too.

I'll bet you'll still need an attenuator, though. But you could get one with the cash you'll save and still have money for recording equipment.

already working on a jcm900 used. i'm definitely getting the mesa 5:50 though. it doesn't hurt having 4 amps sitting around.

1. practice amp
2. gig amp
3. recording amp
4. backup amp

sure have and they're awesome, but it's not my tone. i think the jvm is my tone, but i need a 50 watt jvm. 100 is just too much for me to deal with at this point in my guitar career.

my choices were pretty much like this:

1. mesa 5:50
2. engl screamer
3. marshall vm
4. fender supersonic
5. laney tt50

Hey, just wondering... why couldn't you pull the two outer tubes in the JVM, cut the impedance in half, and run it at 50 watts?

Not that it matter now, though

Is there more involved in getting a 100-watt amp to run at half power, or it pulling two tubes enough?

Usually pulling a pair of tubes will do the trick, as far as getting a 100-watter down to a 50-watter.

Of course when you pull two tubes, you also have to halve the impedance as well. If you've got a 16-ohm cab, for example, you have to run your output from the amp at 8 ohms.
