no solid state amp can touch a good tube amp. solid state's are good for practice and some sound great, but in my opinion, you can't beat that warm sound and great tone of an awesome tube amp.
That's funny. This self-admitted tube snob is GASsing for a SS amp but it sure isn't just a practice amp. :p

well, i wasnt implying that you are a snob, but there are many that won't consider that there are many other ways of amplifying a guitar. yes, there are great sounds in history, but you also have to look foward to creating new sounds- if you like that LP through a marshall sound, great- that is the only way you are going to get it. it is a classic sound that will never go out of style. however, ive heard adrian belew and allan holdsworth through solid state amps and they sound amazing.

yeah there are some great sounding ss amps too. i really like the Crate GFX 212, probably more than my fender deluxe 112 plus. You get some pretty awesome overdrive out of that amp.

uh...what? you obviously missed me saying that tube snob is a little harsh, and I havn't admitted anything. I have nothing against ss amps. I own them. I also own tube amplifiers. In my opinion(and i've used this phrase before..it implies that what I say is not the gospel truth but only the result of my experience of 11 years with different amplifiers) that tube amps sound a lot better than ss amps. I'm not arguing with anyone here. Just putting in my opinion for which amps i think are better in general. Sure there are the occasional bad seeds on both sides as well as some solid state amps that can blow some tube amps out of the water. My opinion is a generalization and it is based on my experience and the sound that i like.

Looks like you missed the context. I'm the "self-admitted tube snob".

The phrase "no solid state amp can touch a good tube amp" sure sounds like you're spouting fact. I missed the "IMO" because it was about two sentences away from that statement. My bad.

i didn't realize you were referring to yourself with "this self-admitted tube snob." The way you quoted me, i thought you were talking about me and I don't want to sound snobbish. I guess it's hard to tell what people mean when you read what they say instead of hearing it. I hope i didn't offend you. and the "no solid state amp can touch a good tube amp" did come across the wrong way now that i go back and look at it. sorry for that. to anyone that read my posts, i don't mean to knock down ss amps. I own one and love it. I just think that tube amps are better sounding, but like someone had stated earlier, its all in the sound that your looking for. i recommended the crate gfx 212 as a great solid state amp for the money. and if you have extra cash lying around, you can splurge and get the marshall mode 4, an impressive solid state amplifier. Daron Malakian of System of a Down used that on both of their latest albums and that amp sounds incredible. But play both types of amps to see what you like. I admit im biased when i say go for a marshall all tube amp! But they do sound great! again sorry for the confusion.

For trying to sell his free User Group Day pickup on here....lol

That's not exactly what I was thinking, but it is kinda funny. Plus, you could add on the way he signed his wife up for the forum so he could get a 2nd pickup and not have to pay for her half of the room! :) I don't think she ever posted anything here. But, you gotta give it to him for "working the system". There were probably others that signed up, came and haven't posted a single thread. No biggie. Trying to sell them a week after UGD was pretty funny.

Yep, bad karma. :)

After a while I could smell the heat being generated by the amp. I looked in the head through the top. I could see all the power tubes looking dim except what may have been the rectifier tube, it was glowing quite brightly.
You sure you've got that thing hooked up right? No tubes in there should be "glowing quite brightly."

That is the first thing that caught my eye, if one tube is glowing really bright then you probably have a bad tube and it is effecting the rest of the amp. take it back to the store you got it from and hook it up there. Let the tech, if they have one take a look, or just get a new set of tubes from them before you return it. If the new set does the same thing, return the amp and get a new one, you will need the extra set of tubes anyway.

Re: Oh tube amps don't suck...I do.

I'm sorry about the title and I'm sorry I'm being a raunch. I've got some things going on in my life right now that are really wearing me down, and this was just that one more thing I didn't need to deal with.

She's not my wife. I just broke up with her.
