OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

According to the website the new Pro-Mods are equipped with Floyd Rose Specials, bummer....

From what I read, the only difference with a Floyd Rose Special is they come with die cast saddles and trem block... alot of players have been upgrading the trem block to brass Big Blocks anyway, and die cast saddles I can live with, that's what Ibanez used on their Edge trems. It doesn't affect tuning stability

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

I have a chrome FR Special on a guitar I made. It is not quite the same. For playing live, you probably won't notice much difference, but it comes out a bit "tinny" sounding when recorded or by itself. Saddles made of zinc and the plate is only partially hardened.

Are you sure they are FS Specials and not the Floyd 1000s that are allegedly made the same, but in Korea and not by Schaller in Germany? The last batch off MIJ San Dimas had the Korean Floyd Rose 1000 series OEM bridges.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

http://charvel.com/en-ID/guitars//search.php?partno=2966000576. In the overview it says floyd rose original but I you go over to the bottom of the specs sheet it says that its a recessed Floyd special. I'm not really sure what to think of this.

On the other hand the MIJ charvels did have have Floyd Rose 1000 units. I have one, and have never had any tuning stability issues. The floyd rose 1000's are Asian made OFRs built to the same spec as the German one while the floyd rose special has zinc alloy saddles and sustain blocks.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

yeah, that is weird that they would go from a OFR or a FRT1000 to a FRS. although I have read somewhere that the Jackson and Charvel have been using a FR O2000 model, but I can't find any solid info on the specs. I have a few FRS now and they are working out fine... sure I swap the cheap blocks with brass ones from J at guitarupgrades on ebay, so the only real difference is the zinc saddles, as the baseplate is the same material.

however, seeing them go to the FRS on the MIM models makes me wonder. is it just a cost savings issue on the bridge only or are they trying to shave off expenses in any areas that might affect quality? I certainly hope not, as I'm a big fan of my MIJ San Dimas Pro Mod and wouldn't want to see the brand take a hit.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

So glad these are coming back. If you wanted a H-S one you could always get a So-Cal and replace the pickguard with a H-S guard.

I sent an e-mail the other day to their customer relations, asking about the route under pickguard, asking specifically about the route under the new MIM ones. After all if the factory is changing, if the specific bridge is change chances are the route may be changing as well. Answer? The guy does not know... :smack:

So I think I will have to wait untill some people out there gets a MIM So-Cal. My golden dream is getting one of those and turn it into an HSS or HSH, I hope the route has room for the middle single coil.

Yeah, you'd think they would have learned from the mistakes of the 80s. Charvel and Kramer were both "THE" brands to own and then they (esp Kramer) started whoring out the name on every cheap piece of whammy and basically lost all credibility..

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

The new MIM pro-mods should be available soon, can't wait to see what people think of them.

Going back to the On the thomann website it says that they have a Recessed Floyd Rose FRT-2000. If I'm not mistaken that is the Floyd Rose Special, though I'm really unsure.
,
On a side note, anyone know what the fret size on the older pro-mods is? I've been wondering for a while. Is is 6105, 6150 or 6100?

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Medium jumbo frets on the older ones.

As for the action, all the ones I had could get "too low to play" without shims (strings flat on the board), so that's not an issue.

I'm assuming the route for the SoCal will be swimming pool or H-S-H at the very least, since Charvel knows they have a hot-rodding community that loves to do various pickup combos.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

The essential Charvel San Dimas superstrat is such a simple, pure design, I love it! Best necks and frets in the business. My 2H is perfect straight from the factory as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes I think about doing a push/pull pot for coil tap and D-tuna, but other than that, but I wouldn't dream of changing anything else. The stock JB/'59 do everything you could ask for.

The white Pro-Mod with black pickguard is my favorite of that series, although it is very similar to the Jackson Adrian Smith. Apparently the MIM version of the Adrian Smith is very, very good for its segment. Gotta love the age we live in, when you can get a extremely nice guitar for $500. I remember when you had to spend $1000 to get a guitar on the level of what $500 buys now.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Yeah, those Adrian Smith models are outstanding. They had a used one at my GC a few weeks back. I would've bought it, if I hadn't just bought a used MIJ Charvel San Dimas. I have to pace myself. I love Charvels and Jacksons.

Yeah, they are! my local GC had a new import Adrian Smith and a used USA one and I could feel very little difference. Definately not $1000 difference!

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

I just realized that they brought the mounting rings back on the pro-mods even though it says direct mount on the website.

Is anyone looking to snap one up when they come out? I'm wondering in particular for the hardtail model.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Regarding Warmoth pickguards, you can specify (somewhere on the form) that it's cut for a Floyd route at the back (forget how it's worded exactly). I ordered several pickguards for my SoCals from them a few years ago, and they were all Floyd-ready.

Only trouble was that Fender and Charvel have different neck heel widths, and I had to modify the neck cutout of the pickguard to fit around the neck comfortably.
As well, the cutout for the Charvel pickguard's bridge pickup was farther forward than the Warmoth, which meant the back of the pickup bumped the body.

I tried to do a S-S-S pickguard, but the body cavity would have to be routed to allow the bridge single to fit.

However, all the holes lined up, so that's good.

But that was with the USA SoCals. No idea on the Japanese or the impending MIM models.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Okay guys, this is the last time I'm reviving this thread. I came across a thread on the sevenstring.org forums talking about the floyd rose 2000, which is the unit which is mounted on the new MIM San Dimas and So-Cals.

Good news, the 2000 is just a black coloured floyd rose 1000 and not a special. The 2000 designates colour. I found this around the same time I got an email from charvel, which said that the trem on those guitars is a floyd rose FRT 02000 and that it "contains some components made of zinc" Though if it is a 2000/1000 I doubt its the saddles, maybe its the sustain block. Its the same unit that they have on the new Jackson pro series.

The new pro-mods sound pretty cool after all. Even though they should bring back the direct mounted pickups.

Here's a fun little review of the new pro-mods. The second part is quite brilliant.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Do you know the routing under the one that has a pickguard?

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

I really LOVE the Trans black on the amp and the blue like chappers is playing. im trying to think what color of pickguard would look cool with the blue....

I love Chappers' reviews!! Funny seeing how the captain has loosened up over the years

Hi,
Did you happen to see how much of the body would have to be routed to put a SSS configuration in there? I really want to do this as well but I don't want to compromise the wood where it may make the post for the FR loose or break through. Any other recommendations with regards to this? Thanks

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Damn....not a fan. I was hoping they were going to blow me away with the 2016 models. First off, they raised the prices by about $300-$350. I don't care for the zebra pickups. I also don't care for the chrome hardware. To me those Charvels need all black hardware, and black or black chrome covered pickups. Those things right there just aren't doing it for me at all. However, I do dig that taxi cab yellow. Maybe I'll buy a body off of Ebay later this year, and assemble what I think the guitar should look like.

However, I kind of dig what they did with the controls. I'm not really a fan of blade switches, and that type of layout, but I dig what they came up with.
