ok, last thread about volume (much more technical)

Re: ok, last thread about volume (much more technical)

typically drew, a larger output transformer tends to really let alot more clarity and bass response. It clears your amp's throat so to speak, and lets the power get delivered more efficiently to the speakers.

The marshall major OT would be a good idea for your application, but there are other choices. Mercury magnetics makes fat core OT's that give you more warmth and low end than typical OT's. You might lose some of the amp's breakup characteristics in the power stage, but you obviously don't want that to begin with so you should be fine with one of the higher powered OT's such as the marshall major.

I'm no tech but I suspect that fitting a Bassman with a Major tranny would cause an impedance mismatch, at least if you used the same taps.

Speaking of impedance mismatches, IIRC Drew was deliberately mismatching his amp's impedance. In addition to stressing the power tubes, it drops the effective power so the power section might be distorting sooner since it's operating less efficiently.

yeah good point alecee. how many tubes did the marshall major have? the primary must have been 1000 and the secondary 4 ohms. (im guessing these figures based on 2x a fender twin) thats a ratio of 250/1. It would probably yield 16 ohms in the secondary if a 4000CT load was placed on the primary.

This is based on what happens when you put a fender twin tranny in a bassman or similar 4000CT load 2 power tube amp. With the fender twin tranny, the 4000CT load gets turned into 8 ohms when placed in a bassman, which is why vibroclones use that and why cesar diaz used it to rig up SRV's Vibroverbs. you'd need a multi tap to make sure you got the right impedence.

Excellent point, I think I remember him saying that he had purposely mismatched the impedances. If that's the case, try matching them and see if that helps.

the volume you guys must play at still boggles my mind!!! i cannot understand it, but good luck anyway. Get good earplugs, you'll be sorry later.
