OK probably a stupod question..PRS Bridge Pickup help

So here's where I'm at.

59 was almost perfect but I needed a bit more 'oomph' in this particular guitar.
JB was a bit too much.

Pearly gates isn't bad...but not quite right. Kinda stuffy sounding in comparison for me?

I've been through all the regular stuff over the years. Wanting to try something else.

What can you suggest...figuring 59 was close..but need a bit more attitude and push.

Custom hybrid? Bro bucker? S Deco?
Matching with a 59 in the neck that sounds fantastic.

PRS Custom 22 with trem from 2002.

Thanks!

Brobucker has that bit more oomph for regular humbucker duties but, IMO, goes best in Lesters. Perpetual Burn is nice on guitars that are more "Stratty". Speaking of which, how much use do you make of coil split sounds?

Ahh, good point thanks.

This is a thicker sounding Custom 22. It think's its a McCarty. LOL

I split the neck some, I generally don't split the bridge. Need it to clean up decently with the volume knob.
For a modern guitar and use of pedals, my playing approach is decidedly old school. LOL

Mine too.

I cannot comment on the S Deco as I have never tried one. My '59/Custom Hybrid is still in its packaging. PB is a production line model. Brobucker is Custom Shop price and a wait while it is built.

How much too much was the JB? Maybe, a magnet swap would bring it into line?

Brobucker, Custom 5, 59 Custom Hybrid, and 78' models come to mind to me.

Or maybe UOA5 in that JB you have to soften it.

Its mostly a preference thing, all of these pups should be a step towards your goal.

In the bridge position of my PRS Custom 22, I have a PRS DGT pickup, and I will likely never swap it out. It's my main guitar and every other guitar tone is compared to that one. On paper, the 78 is extremely similar since a DGT is wound to 9K and has an alnico 2 magnet, so if I was in your situation I'd start there.

When playing live I back up that guitar with an older Santana SE. Since it's a backup guitar, I wanted to get it close to the Custom 22 tonally. After many, many bridge pickups including another DGT, turns out a Custom Custom was the key. It's not crazy hot like the specs would suggest.

I really like the 59/Custom as a step up from the 59 - much more so than the JB.

Perpetual Burn is a good replacement for the JB if you're looking for a similar tone with less output.

Re: OK probably a stupod question..PRS Bridge Pickup help

Skip the JB if it's not a Kramer. Or a Jackson Dinky. Honestly, it never sounded "right" to me with anything but the full 25½ inch long scale but that's just my opinion.

Re: OK probably a stupod question..PRS Bridge Pickup help

I have a WLH set in my SC-58 and they are perfect in that guitar.

If you like the 59b but just want a little more juice and more beef, you might try an A8 mag in it. It's a really great match in some guitars.

I'm another big fan of the 59/C hybrid, also.

Try a UOA5 in that 59b. Thank me later.

Let us know how it turns out in direct comparison to one another. I've never tried those in a PRS.

Re: OK probably a stupod question..PRS Bridge Pickup help

I have tried a Perpetual Burn in an all mahogany PRS (22 fret). I thought it was a little thin and suffered from the same problem the JB has with mahogany (to my ears).
I really like the Gibson 498t paired with a 59n in that PRS. The shorter scale and mahogany combination needs a little bit of grit that the 498t provides, and the 498t does not overpower the 59n. It has a similar character.

The PATB-3 would be another good bet, and I also like the Air Zone in those guitars. It is smoother than the other 2. I had it paired with a Jazz n for a while, but now with a PAF Joe.

I didn't like the 59/custom hybrid so I'm not the one to ask about that one.

Re: OK probably a stupod question..PRS Bridge Pickup help

You could also try a PRS 59/09. It is a step up from vintage power and has a nice oomph to it while not being over the top. (Think is about 9.5k or so)
