The slimmer a neck is, side to side or front to back, the faster it generally is. The downside is that it´s also generally more tiring. How much this affects you depends on the neck, and more importantly your hands, endurance and playing style. This is why there are soooo many neck profiles, and why almost every profile ever created is preferred by someone.
Funny side note: A guy I was building a custom for wanted his neck a LOT slimmer that I recommended, final width after all of the reprofiling was 1 1/2". I told him dozens of times it wasn´t a good Idea, that it would tire him out too fast.
He came back with the axe just over a month after it was done and wanted a new neck, a wider one. Which he of course had to pay for, and it was a rosewood neck with a 29 fret ebony Board
Just goes to show that sometimes the people that do things for a living know what they´re talking bout :friday:

1 5/8 nut widths are a nightmare for me, I'm selling my Wolfgang for that exact reason. I just can't play comfortably close to the nut due to the narrow width. When I switch to my 1 11/16 guitars, it's like a night and day difference. That extra 1/16 of an inch makes a huge difference.

Well for the guy who wanted to know why I needed to know, since I didn't have a clue what the difference was, if I get another guitar I want to know what I'm getting, or know the width of a neck that I like or don't like.
I know my soloist is 1 11/16 so I didn't want anything smaller, and I saw that the EVH charvel had a 1 5/8 nut. So I wanted to know if that neck was different than mine basically.
Where I live , you have to order a 2,000 and some guitar before even being able to see or play it, so you kinda have to know what you are asking for.
