Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

Well, after some screaming and kicking, I finally am settled. I no longer have V30's in my cab, replaced with Splawn Small Blocks. The V30's are middy and nasty with the Quickrod. The Small Blocks take care of the mids a lot and warm over the whole sound. So what do I think about the Splawn? It's the best horrible amp yet. Best horrible?? Let me put it to you this way....if you suck, it'll let you know 10X. This stressed me for a week. But, once you get used to it making you very visible, it sounds glorious. Soloing is where this amp excells, I can play flawlessly with this amp with HALF the gain I would think I'd need. Rhythm is a witch since it'll show your picking flaws. Sounds GREAT though, just be warned!
Now the so so and eh. The clean is better than a 5150, but not by much. Not much sparkle. Typical marshall clean type sound I'd guess. The effects loop is basically an annoying joke. Yes is can sound good, but the volume has to be show volume before it gets there. And no freakin footswitch control. I'm reaaallly gonna miss that.
It's truly a professional amp and not for the beginning player, I think it would make me wanna quit if I was just starting. My students are saying similar, great for me to tell what they're playing, baaad for them hehe:naughty: Anyways, here's a low volume vid. I'll show you what the V30's sound like, then the Small Blocks...

V30's, nasally.

i never really was a fan of v30's

the smallblocks sound great though, whatever they are

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

You know,

I actually liked the sound with those vintage 30s better!?!? Not as meaty but more cut and I guess clarity? Maybe do an X pattern mix to get the best of both worlds.

I know what you mean by showing you your flaws. I went from a 5150II to a JCM800 and have been getting used to the transition for a few months. The 5150 seemed to play itself... the Marshall is allot less for giving (I know they are different but the 800 and splawn seem to be in the same area code at least!).

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

Imo the small block sound is way too muddy to give a good rhythm sound. I prefer the V30s on this vids, more bite and clarity. I guess the amp could sound killer with EV-speakers.
I'm with you on showing the flaws. The less gain you need to achieve the sound you want, the more of your mistakes will be noticeable.

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

I like blocks better, but I think you need to X them with some other to really get your thing going.

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

The blocks sound a bit too muffled for my taste. I like the V30s "in your face" sound, but I agree it can be a bit too much sometimes. Those suggesting an X pattern with both are right on; that's what I'd do.

I prefer the V30s, I think they're a great fit for that style of amp.

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

Call me crazy, but from the looks of things, the mic placement isn't the same between the two. Also, you're overdriving the living daylights out of the mic on the cam. Turn it down. And get rid of that annoying background buzz noise. That's not helping.

Sorry to be so critical, but too many variables changed to make this a fair comparison. From what you have there, neither sound bad, just different.

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

Not to derail this thread but is there a big difference between running an X pattern and top/bottom combination?

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

Small blocks sounded more comfortable from a player's perspective.

V30s had a lot more presence and cut, and hence: body.

You should try running a pair of each in an X pattern in your cab. Best of both worlds?

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

I kinda liked the V30 clip better too, but I agree about the X pattern thingy.

I like the tone of the second video myself. I kinda prefer a darker deeper tone anyways....but that's just me.

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

I'm a warhead, too!

I like them both. Not sure which way I'm going with my next cab - either H30/V30 mix or Greenies. I have a Comp which has more bite and is brighter than the QR.

+1

I like the second one too. The first one sounds a good bit like a Marshall, and the second doesn't, but it sounds more right for that amp.

Re: Ok, Splawn vid, little better review

I just bought a video camera about 5 minutes ago online, I'll try and get clips of my Splawn through my V30 loaded Marshall in the next few weeks.
