Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

I suppose I should say Fender as the gorgeous clean tones from my JTM45 are based on the Bassman... :D

I probably do prefer Fender clean tones as when I always want to push a Vox into a little breaking up drive sound.

Which means I basically need a Deluxe Reverb, an AC30 and a JTM45 to cover everything! ;)

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

Both cleans are great! It all depends on the type of music & application. :)
I like both!

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

I love me fender clean with singles. I've never AC30'd but I dig Brian may as much as anybody.

Closest I've come to a vox would be my mesa Lone Star Special as it's class A and sports 84's. I love that clean with hummers. Just a touch of hair and compression that's thoroughly enjoyable.

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

As far as a clean tone is concerned, nothing IMO, will ever top a good Fender combo amp.

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

Hey, I absolutely love them both, but if I were alone on a desert island with Mila Kunis, she gets the Fender and I get the Vox.

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

When I play clean I like to have little to no breakup, so I guess it's fender for me. But to my (dis?)credit, I've used AC30's in venue backlines before and I could never figure out how to get a tone out of them, actually had better luck with an AC15!

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

this is like asking which is better red or blue

I use both if I had to vote I'd probably say that for what I do the Vox is overall the more versatile amp. It sounds great with my 12 string and various single coiled guitars, when using humbuckers the cleans have a bit of hair on em.

But really this can also depend on the particular vox amp as the circuits can vary greatly. Just on my new AC15C1 alone the difference between Top Boost and Normal are very profound imho.

I also think that speaker selection, tubes, how you play, what you play, etc are very important factors.

I use three amps right now an Orange set dirty (for british crunch) a Vox (main amp, always on set just before breakup), and a Fender set clean.

The stereotypical Fender clean tone (usually a Twin Reverb from the 60's loaded with JBL or Jensens) and a stereotypical Vox clean tone (usually a vintage AC30 loaded with Celestion AlNiCo Blues) compliment each other well and offer different types of flavors. But again every amp, every instrument, every player, every environment are different.

The obvious differences in these amps is the difference in circuit layouts, tube types (6L6 is a very different inherent tone from an EL84), and speakers (an AlNiCo Blue is nothing like a Jensen or a JBL).

I'd have to go out of the poll choices and say Ampeg. Some of their higher wattage amps from the 60's were just superb on the cleans. Fatter and warmer, with a rounder voice than Vox or Fender, with better tweakability on the active EQ sections. ;)

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

Fender cleans . . . although that might just be due to the reverb. Fender has made my favourite sounding reverbs.

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

I voted Vox, but I like them both. Had a Pre-CBS Twin years ago that had a ton of head room, but I think I prefer the chime that the old Vox's have

Re: Ok, which do you prefer?

I have a '65 Super reverb reissue, and I hate to be a spoiler, but if you think a reissue sounds anything remotely like a real blackface, then your sadly mistaken.
What some of you are calling "fender cleans" is a bad joke.
Then, I suppose a new Vox is equally a travesty of itys former glory.
Usually , its Vox for Chime, and Fender for glassy belltone.
Ive never heard a real olfd Vox with Celstion Blues, but have plenty of hands on expereince with old blackface fenders.
The breakup of a real '65 Blackface deluxe is the holy grail of all post-tweed tone. You really have to hear it to get it..its beyond words.
I m poretty sure our Vox counterpart is equally amazing in its own right, but more chimey and with a edgier grtiier sound..at least from what I've heard on record.
