okay my tremolo bar just broke

on my strat knockoff (w/ vintage tremolo) i accidentally broke the tremolo bar. Problem is, it broke right before the part that screws in so there is no way i can think of to screw it out nor enough room to screw a new one in. You guys hae any suggestions as to how to get that piece out?

hopefully this works but the lighting is pretty bad

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

You need to take it someone who has a drill press and who knows how to deal with broken off screws like that. They'll drill a hole in the broken off screw and then thread a reverse thread "easy out" into the broken off piece and unscrew it and get that broken off piece out of there again. Lew

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

I had that happen to a cylinder head bolt on a 440 engine in the late 80s. Much easier to get out of an engine than a guitar though, LOL.

My Mooretone strat has had a broken tremelo arm for about six months now. Finding the time to do the little repairs and stuff is getting harder, and harder, and harder....

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

Ouch, me and my dad once had a problem like that on a lock we were replacing in an old trunk. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes.

Sad thing is, we had to throw it away, we managed to get it out but then we realised the lock was useless. We could have broken it...

Yep. It's a fairly simple fix if you have the right tools.

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

You need to do exactly as Lew has outlined. I'm sure he's dealt with this many times.

This will happen to everyone with a vintage trem sooner or later. It's more likely to happen if it's not screwed in all the way. That's why I like the stout push in bars found on Wilkinsons better. I have heard that Callaham now has a vintage trem replacement block that accepts a heavy duty push in bar.

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

Easy out :D I have to do it to my car's engine block tommorow... motor mount bolt sheared off :( lucky I didn't lose the engine

slade

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

I've seen broken trem arm threaded pieces removed from the block with a screw extractor......

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

use a titanium bit, smaller than the thread. Drill it out. Screw in a screw, then unscrew the broken part out. Or just nut up and buy a new bridge.

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

thanks yeah, needless to say i learned my lesson on trying to do Dime-Harmonics on a vintage trem :D

ya know the trem block is really crappy though is their any good replacements that would fit the cavity(im assuming its standerd size) without seting me back a ton of money
ive been having real issues with it staying in tune even when i didnt use the tremolo

For fear of looking noobish... dime harmonics?

Re: okay my tremolo bar just broke

I'm sure you could pick up a bridge from a squire on ebay for a few bucks, and it'll fit.
