Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

You should take core samples.

:lmao:

That was the most hysterical thing I've read on the net in weeks.

Guarantee the person who did this to that poor guitar was on a forum JUST LIKE THIS going:

"Broooooooo....I need better toooone maaaaan. Which pickups should I get to take the cr@p out of my sound maaaaaaan."

:lmao:

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Maybe it was a REALLY bright guitar? It had a Tone Zone installed!

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Picked up two cans of Aircraft Remover today.

The warning on the back states "Warning. Do not use on aircraft."

DUH. It would REMOVE THEM!

Found a layer of gold on the back. I didn't see the silver, so maybe they were trying out the different backing colors of the candy apple red on each side of the body. Did a soak with some strong auto paint remover yesterday that cleared away some of the glop, scraped it, then poured on the aircraft remover. Got about 80% of the wood showing on the front after a 30 minute application of this stuff. Nice. Looks like there's a veneer. Not so nice. :P

FYI, this stuff burns skin on contact. Wear thick rubber gloves if you use it. I got a tiny drop on my arm above the line of the glove and immediately rinsed it off. Stung pretty bad even though it was only on there a few seconds.

FYI 2, Rust-O-Leum makes a similar one. Doesn't work.

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

I picked up a Les Paul at a pawn shop that went through the same kind of treatment several years ago. The punk who had the guitar slathered flat black brush-on Rust-o-leum ALL over the guitar, even dipping the pickups, the fretboard/frets, and the tuning machines in the crap. And it had an el-ghetto Van Halen wannabe paint job under that (with tape still on), too. When I cleaned it out, the crap came off in a thick goopy mess that even took out the original finish underneath.

A friend of mine turned me onto a really good guitar refinisher in the area, so I gave him a call. Needless to say, he hooked me up- the end result was a flawless Gold-Top finish that was perfect in every way.

I also picked up a Flying-V that had electrical tape stuck all over it, too. But that's a story for another day.

Yes it is pretty nasty stuff, and nasty fumes. You need to wear gloves and face mask and use it in a properly vented area. After each coat i went and took a walk for fresh air.

Actually, using the garbage bag (I cut the bottom and a side so it opens all the way and then close it by folding it in half) keeps the fumes way down, which is beneficial in two ways. The stripper works better, and the garage doesn't smell hardly at all. I apply the stripper and then quickly fold the bag. Come back 30 minutes later and there's only a faint scent of it, along with a bunch of easily scrapeable goop. :D

I must try using a garbage bag the next time I do a refinish. :)

Okay, seven layers of hell.. err.. paint.. removed. Still need to hit it with the orbital and spindle sanders, but most of the junk is removed.

See, again, that looks AWESOME! You couldn't distress like that if you tried.

It does actually look pretty cool, but it's not smooth, and to get it smooth, I'd have to sand all the coolness off. ;) It's still kinda chunky along the sides.

I'm setting it aside for a few days to work on some BC Rich bodies for now.

-------If anyone wants it as it stands for $100 shipped in the USA, let me know. :D -------

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Those infernal layers
Thoses damned infernal layers
The seven layers of Hell
Hear the cry of the guitar
Raid the body with it's paint
The quest for the sacred remover
Has become it's goal

:lmao:

DUUUUUDE! That guitar looks frickin BAD-ASS now! You should clean up the pup cavities just enough so that they sit in there comfortably and then leave her be! or if they sit in there fine already, you could just leave it as is. I would definitely play that guitar!
