Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Just put it back together as it is and scribble "Tyler" over and over again on the headstock. no-one will notice...

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

^^ That's another option, plus recutting the headstock in that polarizing gumby shape for authenticity.

Long time no see doc, how have you been?

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Hit it with the orbital yesterday, most of the paint is gone now. Will clean it up some more in the next few days and tru oil it. I think there was some decent grain under all that glop.

New workshop, new schedule, lots of travelling, not much time for forums I'm afraid. i drop in occasionally to see if there is anything interesting going on but find it's often the same old questions being asked... :)

A much healthier lifestyle than sitting moribundly in front of a screen trading idle banter (yes, I'm not hypocritical at all :D). I've moved to the UK recently, so who knows, our paths may cross.

Well, if you are in Leicester you aren't far from my friend Dave Farmiloe in Kettering. Dave is one of the guitar techs at Fender UK. We trained together and he is largely responsible for dragging me kicking and screaming back into the business about thirty years ago. Been trying to get away to visit him for months . If I do, I'll let ya know...

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Yes, I could just about walk to Kettering. Sounds good; send me a pm if you happen to be in this neck of the woods.

Nice work. Ya know, that might not look that bad with a dark see through stain on it. Just enough to seal the wood.

There's still a tiny bit of sealer on there (didn't see it in the garage, but I see it in the pics) so I need to hit it once more with the orbitel, but then I'm just going to tru oil it. That'll add a little bit of color and seal it. (That's Tru Oil over bare wood on the Beast in my avatar pic.)

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

So, how much lighter is the body now that several stratified layers of travesty have been scraped off?

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

I really should have weighed it before and after, but it's gotta be close to a pound and a half lighter. Maybe even two pounds. No joke.

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Alright Dominus!!!

One thing though, is there any way to somehow remove a layer or two of that goop in the cavities?
You obviously can't sand it but perhaps there's a power tool that could at least thin it out? If not then another hit with the 'fumes?

I'm definitely gonna pour some stuff in the cavities to loosen it up and then hit it with the screwdrivers/scrapers to get them fairly clean as well.

A router and pickup cavity template do an excellent job ;)

And that is why Dominus is the master...

:notworthy:

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

WOW.....you actually found a piece of Alder inside that cocoon of $h1t! Kind of like braking open geode (AKA Thunder Egg). You never know what your going to find!

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Reminds me of Cakire's edible creations.

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

I'd sure like to see it finished now, I can't believe how good the wood looks under all that goopy stuff...
