Old 59

Hi everyone
Found a vintage blues set on the internet and got them for 60 euro both. In Your opinion how old are they? The J on the bridge pick up stands for juarez but what about the L on the neck pick up?

Re: Old 59

Probably from the late 80s/ early 90s. I'm sure they'll sound spectacular.

Re: Old 59

Nope, Lydia Daniels is a D, I have one of her pickups (below). The "L" stands for "Lesona", as in the Lesona winder Seymour bought from Gibson after they moved from Kalamazoo. I'm not sure exactly when they started stamping them that way. I have a Pearly Gates neck that is labeled PGNL. I've never seen it labeled that way on a bridge pickup though.

As for the age of the OP's pickups, the large logo and the black ink on the 59BJ put it into the early 90's at least. The stamps in the early to mid 80's were the lighter blue ink...... and I believe this continued through at least most of the 80's, but I'd have to ask MJ. Not sure when they transitioned to 4 letter black ink stamps. My PG that is labeled PGNL has the black ink and came OEM in a 2002 Dean Hardtail, which I thought was late for that stamp. However, Dean might have just had it in stock from before Hardtail production though. So, the OP's set could even be into the mid/late 90's. In 2002 they went to the small computer printed numerical 2 line labels for better inventory control, so everything before that had the 3 or 4 letter stamps, but....... the 3 letter stamps are older and the 4 letter later.

Here is a pic of my early 80's JB. Approx. 83'-84' according to MJ. Notice there is no baseplate stamp with the SD logo even pushing into the mid 80's.

Re: Old 59

If it were me, I’d advise repotting them prior to install. I had issues with the stock JB in a 90s Hamer and I’ve read others had similar issues with other Duncans from the same era. Easier now than after they’re in and won’t stop squealing...

Re: Old 59

Look at the baseplates. They are from different periods. The bridge was made from 83 to 88, the neck from 88 to 02.

Thanks. I totally missed the difference in Logo size. I'm still getting the small details down.

I have a question now. If the OP bridge was made from 83-88 with a big logo, then how does MJ date my JB with no logo on baseplate to 83-84?

Re: Old 59

My system is not perfect, but i bought SDs over 30 years. And i looked for threads on this forum. If someone can help to improve.

I still look for people to confirm or add something:

1. no backlogo, long tag with full model model name: 1976 to late 70ies
2. no backlogo, small tag without winder initial from late 70ies up to ?
3. no backlogo, small tag with winder initial from ? to 1983
4. big backlogo without MiA, small tag with winder initial from at least 1983 to 1988
5. small backlogo with MiA, small tag with winder initial from 1988 to 2002
6. small backlogo with MiA, large tag with SN and Model from 2002 to ?
7. small backlogo with MiA, large tag with date from ? to ?

When did the silk screen front logo come?

Re: Old 59

Wow, that's a lot. I'm saving that and thank you so much for sharing that 30 years of knowledge. Amazing.

I think the silkscreen front logo came sometime in the mid to late 90's, but when I started ordering shop floor custom's circa 2001-2002 I ordered some with the logo and it was silkscreened. I actually still have a double cream set of APH'S from 02' with the silkscreen logo.

So apparently, 83', 88' and 02' were pivotal years with regard to logo additions and/of changes. I need to keep that in mind and commit it to memory.

Re: Old 59

Ok. thanks for the info. This thread has become a small summary of the history of this company and I'm happy with this. I measured the DCR of both pickups and the neck one reads 7.64K and the bridge one reads 8.5K. I think I'll follow the advice of formula73, repotting them before installation. Never done before so I need a little time to understand all the steps (don't want to damage the pickups). starting from your info and browsing the SD site I found out this page:

Re: Old 59

I've re-potted pickups in the past just using plain parafin wax that you can buy at any hobby store. My wife used to keep it for candle making. I realize it's not the same as the mixes pro pickup makers use, but it works just fine and it's really an easy process.

There needs to be an SD pickup thread with all the stats on all the pickups and this needs to be in it as soon as some of the missing info gets filled out.

I know some still hold onto the 80/20 (bees) wax mix, but there is really no reason to. Paraffin has a lower melting point, so less chance of damaging the pickup.

Stew Mac did an article on it as well

Re: Old 59

I think I got this in the late 70s. Does that seem right? Anything different versus current?

Yep, I have three of these, too. Some of them have red ink like yours, some have black ink like the later ones. Does that mean anything?

A nice touch is the oval sticker. I have seem it on Repairs / Rewounds of Gibson pickups too.
