Old 59N w/A8 in Bridge -- Big Surprise

Picked up a very nice and inexpensive PRS SE Akesson (LP style, ebony board, wrap tailpiece), plays nice and was less than $300.... so why not. Has a beefy but bright very LP tone, actually pretty amazing for the price.

Anyhow, have been swapping pups in and out of the bridge, tried a Norton, VHPAF, JB, 59B with various magnets (A2, RCA5), but couldn't find a balanced tone I liked, which is vintage slightly hot and chewy and sizzly (early VH, ZZ, Zep). Need nice cleans to heavier gain.

So looking through my box o stuff I pull out an old 59N (reads 7.4k) and pop in an A8 just for fun..... WOW! Really incredible tone -- very much like a EVH/78 and a WB Habanero (one of THE BEST pickups ever), but punchier and brighter. It is on the bright side but not unpleasant bright, kinda PG bright, but super articulate, really pick sensitive, punchy, chewy, and cleans up great. Have always like a 59, but can be too mid-scooped, the A8 certainly fixes that. Also though a neck 59 would be too low output and bright, but not the case at all with the A8.

Just throwin it out there fwiw.... thanks

Sounds like a fun experiment. Post some sound clips!

i've heard an A8 59n in the bridge is similar to a Maxon Super 70. the EVH comparison makes sense

Sounds about right to me.... I don't chase any player's particular tone, but I have had a lot of pickups and played through a lot of Marshalls over the years..... this 59N with the A8 magnet sounds really close to the VH1 tone. Not trying to cop that tone, but it's not a bad one! I was frankly surprised that a pretty low output neck pickup with an A8 would sound so big in the bridge, but it does.... It's staying!

59N works pretty well in the bridge with the more powerful mags, had one with a ceramic in an old lp....
