Old Duncan Humbucker Identification

I have an old Duncan Humbucker (all black) with a sticker on the back with letters "DCJ".
Anyone know if this is a Duncan Custom? Seems like there's no way to know what
model these pickups are unless they still have a sticker.

That pickup is a Duncan Custom; the 'J' indicates it was wound by Maricela “MJ” Juarez.

Re: Old Duncan Humbucker Identification

DCJ would be a duncan custom. If you are missing the sticker many times you can examine the features to tell you which one you have. A DC reading will be the easiest way to eliminate most possibilities from there it gets trickier but you can make a edumacated guess at it.

One of my favorite pickups in the Duncan lineup.

Does anyone know if the Duncan Custom pickup works better in the neck or bridge position?
I have a tele that could use a new humbucker in the neck position100_3604.jpg

Re: Old Duncan Humbucker Identification

Its better in the bridge... in the neck it is hella loud. You would need a monster bridge pickup to keep up with it.

The Duncan Custom is primarily a bridge pickup since it uses a ceramic magnet and is wound to ~14K. I've heard of it being used as a neck pickup in a shred stick, but it would be far too hot to balance with a single coil bridge. It might balance volume-wise if you wired it in parallel, but I have no idea what that would sound like.

i have a custom in the neck of a hamer monaco elite (les paul) and it works a lot better than i thought it would but it is really hot and you need something fat sounding and loud to keep up in the bridge. wiring it in parallel might be a cool option with a single coil bridge pup

Re: Old Duncan Humbucker Identification

That photo is actually a little old. The bridge pickup has been replaced with a Duncan Hot Rails model which works really well.
I also have a Seth Lover pickup around so I'll probably try using that in the neck position.

Though I bet a hot rails would keep up with it. 'Course you would probably want to lower the Custom and raise the Hot Rails.
