Old Screamin' Demon

Has the Screamin' Demon always been like this?

I have an ESP George Lynch Model guitar that I bought new around 1990 and I was wondering what pickup was originally in it. I always thought that it was a Screamin' Demon but it looks completely different. It has no logo on it, but some of my old JB's from my Kramers didn't have that either and also at the back there is no Seymour Duncan stamp or logo.
I have included a pic what the guitar looked like.
The pics of the pickup : "screamin' demon" in black written on the back was probably done by my guitartech some 20 years ago.
Is this a Screamin' Demon?

Re: Old Screamin' Demon

The original bridge pickup in that particular model was the Duncan Distortion. The Demon didn't come out until a few years later. Measure the DC resistance. That'll tell ya for sure. Should read around 16.4k or so for the Distortion.

Re: Old Screamin' Demon

Looks like a Duncan Distortion to me.
IIRC, the Screamin Demon was not even designed yet in 1990...
What is the total DC resistance of the coils? That would tell you a whole lot of information.

Re: Old Screamin' Demon

The Demon always has one row of hex poles.

The pickup pictures is not a DD, though, since it has a normal size magnet. The DD has a double thickness magnet.

Re: Old Screamin' Demon

The thing is : this pickup sounds a lot like a Demon and is around 10K.
Maybe it was ESP-made?
Is there anybody around who knows what was in the first production "skulls and snakes"-Lynch model ESP? I can't seem to find any info.

Re: Old Screamin' Demon

The original pickup in those things at that time was the Duncan Distortion because that is what he used then. I find it interesting that the pickup you have there measures around 10K yet doesn't even have the hex poles of a Demon. It's possible it could be an early version of the Demon before it became official. It was probably in the works for a while before being signed off on. You could email MJ in the Custom Shop. She may remember.

Re: Old Screamin' Demon

Can you measure the inductance? That way we can find out whether it's overwound awg42 or underwound awg43.
