Onboard preamp

I have a MIM Fender Jazz V with a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. I am wanting to add an oboard preamp to have more flexiablity for tone change. I play mostly gospel and contemporary christian music. Has anyone done this and what prepamp would you recommend for that genre?

Re: Onboard preamp

What controls does the bass have as standard? Neck Volume, Bridge Volume, Master passive treble roll-off or something else?

Most traditional Jazz Bass players achieve a wide variety of tonal variations simply by the balance of output between the two pickups. Turn one pickup up to maximum. Turn the second up to maximum but, then, roll it off slightly. This creates a notch filtering effect and, depending on where you finger the strings, plenty of interesting sounds are on tap.

The obvious candidate is the STC-3p. This works over three frequency bands but, sometimes, this fact works against the range of sounds that are possible from the pickups alone.

A less obvious candidate is the Blackouts for Bass 2-band EQ. This system does less than the STC-3p but what it does do should enhance the basic QP pickups sound.

Re: Onboard preamp

Also wondering about the differences between the STC-2/STC-3 and the Blackout preamps. Can anyone point to some more definitive info on the differences?

Re: Onboard preamp

STC-2 has no midrange pot.

Blackouts has bass cut/boost and a higher frequency cut/boost with a selectable frequency range. Old farts such as I select the lower "growl" band.

Re: Onboard preamp

Im thinking in put STC3a instead of STC3p with GPs on my Jazz Bass 5 string. Does somebody did that or recommends?

Re: Onboard preamp

The difference between the -a and -p versions is the resistance value of the Balance control dual-ganged pots.

The pots supplied with the -p version are intended to match with passive pickups such as the Quarter Pound. This is the EQ kit that you need.

Connecting QPs via the 25k pots of the -a version will work, sort of, but the loading placed on the pickups will ruin their sound.

Great, Funkfingers! Tx!
Now, I was looking into my 'generic' Tobias, I've there a STC3a and an ASB2 pickup set. As those are active pickups, should this bass have 2 batteries (18v)?
Tx once again!

In my opinion, no. Each powered pickup or EQ accessory reduces overall battery life but the supply voltage remains 9v.
