Re: Onboard preamp
What controls does the bass have as standard? Neck Volume, Bridge Volume, Master passive treble roll-off or something else?
Most traditional Jazz Bass players achieve a wide variety of tonal variations simply by the balance of output between the two pickups. Turn one pickup up to maximum. Turn the second up to maximum but, then, roll it off slightly. This creates a notch filtering effect and, depending on where you finger the strings, plenty of interesting sounds are on tap.
The obvious candidate is the STC-3p. This works over three frequency bands but, sometimes, this fact works against the range of sounds that are possible from the pickups alone.
A less obvious candidate is the Blackouts for Bass 2-band EQ. This system does less than the STC-3p but what it does do should enhance the basic QP pickups sound.
