One stop shop for EVH sound?

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

Why do you hate EVH? :(

Personally, I'd be wary of any single pedal claiming to be the complete EVH sound. As others have said, there's much more to the signal path than just a pedal. And as dr. barlo said, guys like Pete Thorn could make almost anything sound good, especially in the vein of EVH - have you guys seen Pete's video on how to play Eruption? He has spent SO much time dissecting the nuance of how to be EVH, and imo that's where a lot of that tone will come from. Take any decent hotrodded Marshall style pedal, and add a player who KNOWS the EVH style, and the demo will sound godly... And that's how hype is born :D

Tone=gear=physical sound. Performance=articulation=what is done with the gear. Two different matters.

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

Pretty cool. You can see the new Gil Yaron Bone guitar behind Pete.

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

And how sure are you that they are independent?

Hmmm...the fact that ppl spending time practicing to improve performance. And ppl spend time learning about gear. If tone was really just in the fingers the latter pursuit would be unnecessary, no? "Tone is in the fingers" is one of most ridiculous guitar myths.

So none of your tone is generated by the way you touch the strings? And the way you hear tone is utterly divorced from the ability and dynamics of the player? I'm not saying tone is ALL in the fingers... but a good bit of it is, in my opinion. :)

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

There's also the argument that says "if you play the recorded output of a given artist reasonably competently, someone is bound to say "You sound just like [insert name]""...

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

The character of the JTM45 can't hurt either.

But yeah...

Mad Prof makes an Eric Johnson too - the Golden Cello.

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

RE: Tone in the fingers...

The fingers are responsible for some of the tone... although tone gets less dependent on the fingers the more gain and distortion is thrown on top.

Try playing with mushy fingertips (like those who just started playing guitar/haven't practiced much) vs. hard, well practiced callouses.

Guarantee you'll hear the difference.

Of course there will a difference.

Re: One stop shop for EVH sound?

"Don't ever venture into an amp or guitar forum. You'll see page after page of arguments by people who still can't figure it out* either."
-- Guitar World interviewer speaking to EVH, February 2014 issue.

*Figure out how EVH got his sound.

EVH agreed with the interviewer and cited the Seymour Duncan forum as the "worst of those damn forums."

P.S. Just kidding about that last part. :argh:
