Oops, I bought another Marshall

In 1980 I bought a new Marshall JMP 2104 combo (50w master volume 2x12). It sounded perfect for my style and I loved it. Played loads of gigs with it with various guitars (SG, LP Deluxe, Tele) and it always hit the spot. But in 1984, being young and stupid (mostly stupid), and thinking I needed something more versatile (by which I meant clean channel, reverb, effects loop...) I sold it and (unbelievably!) replaced it with a solid state Carlsbro combo.

I've long regretted that sale! :banghead:

A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to acquire a '77 JMP 2204 head and jumped on it. The '77 is a really sweet amp, but it doesn't sound like my old 2104 combo. This could be down to the combo format and the G12-65s, but I suspect it's also down to the year - from what I've read it seems Marshall changed the circuit around '77 to add an extra gain stage. My guess is that my '77 dates from before the change - it certainly has less gain on tap than my old 2104.

Idly trawling eBay for JMPs last week I came across this 1980 2104 combo (advertised as a '79 but the serial number confirms it as 1980). The power lamp doesn't work - which was also a fault with my original one. This makes me think this amp's production date is close to mine!

In a strange coincidence it also turns out the seller is an old friend - a guy who was a couple of years below me at school. Our old bands once gigged together and in 1983 I part-exchanged my Goldtop LP Deluxe for his Tele. Predictably, he no longer has the Deluxe and I no longer have the Tele. Pair of idiots! He even says he was inspired to buy his first 2104 after hearing me play mine!

Obviously karmic forces are at work here. I had to bid, and I had to win it!

Can't wait to pick this baby up! I'll probably be selling my '77 2204 to pay for it, but it'll be worth it if this sounds anything like my original 1980 2104. It'll be cool to meet up with my old friend after all this time too.

Pics once I get my hands on it. Thanks for listening. :)

Re: Oops, I bought another Marshall

and the 77' is seriously my dream amp...

let me know if the combo is everything memory serves it as! the nastalgia should be worth the money IMO!

thats like when my dad recently played a 74' tele just like his...he sold it to buy us kids a x-mas in 1987...just as great as he remembered and it brought back so many smiles!

Re: Oops, I bought another Marshall

Awesome!!!

I could never dig those things- the head is exactly the same- it's just that open backed combo thing that changes everything about it.

I can appreciate the difference in tonality caused by the combo format, but it does seem to me that the '77's gain is significantly different to what I remember of my '80.

As an example, here's a thread that mentions alleged change in the circuit of the 50w JMP MVs:

Guess I can always try swapping the '77 and '80 amps in the combo!

Re: Oops, I bought another Marshall

Great score Simon! They're are seriously cool amps. Like the Ebay name BTW!!!

Re: Oops, I bought another Marshall

Those are my favorites of all the Marshall combos.

Personally, I think the Scott Gorham line is what hooked you! LOL

If you can, you should try and keep all your Marshalls. None of them are decreasing in value or tone.

One pedal that turns those Marshalls into crushing monsters is the Banzai Coldfusion. I've gotten chills from plugging a CF into a medium gain vintage Marshall. They're wide open and neutral sounding, but just add thick gain.

Re: Oops, I bought another Marshall

A friend of mine has one of those. He runs an LP custom and a Rat into it and it sounds killer. Great score...

Re: Oops, I bought another Marshall

Great score Simon. I remember a friend of mine had one and the tone he got was great, different to a head/cab as you say due to the open back combo config.
I'm with GJ, if ya can keep your Marshalls. I've been foolish in the past to sell a stack (pun not intended!!!) of Marshalls including late 70's JMP's and a Silver Jubilee. I'd never make the same mistake twice!!!

I wanted to use it for the band I was in about 5 years ago, when I first registered on ebay. Couldn't convince the other guys though, so I'm keeping it for my solo projects. :)

The fact that Scott Gorham was endorsing those amps in the late 70s was a major factor in me buying my original one. I had the LP Deluxe, the Lizzy riffs and most of the hair to go with it too!
