Opinions on DIY EP recording

So far it is just drums and 2 guitars , still gotta record the bass and vocals and get it mixed and mastered but here is a track we recorded.. I was going for a very fuzzy sound and I'm pretty happy with it since it has not even been mixed yet.

What do you guys think, any tips or thoughts ?

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

kinda reminds me of kyuss \m/, i was hoping at 1:13 for it go crazy for a bit since there was a build up of sorts. maybe jam a crazy part in the same vein right there, THEN bring it down like at 1:13? idk. i could find an example on blues for the red sun if you would like. sounds cool tho.

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

thanks for the feedback, I get that about my sound and playing ALOT.. "hey you sound like Kyuss" It's funny though cause I don't even listen to Kyuss haha, I do love QOTSA though. I will try a cool jamout at that time in the song next rehearsal and see how it fits. I'm downloading some Kyuss now so for sure let me know some examples off Blues for the Red Sun !

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

Definitely A QOTSA vibe going on -- very nice/warm sounding guitars! Could definitely tell the drum track is dry. You should re-post when it's mixed. Cool song.

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

Good start man. Mixing it to make it feel more in your face will make for a solid track!

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

thanks guys!! I'm glad it has a QOTSA vibe they are one of my favorite bands. I will for sure post it on here when it is fully recorded and mixed and mastered. I got another track we did too I could post if you guys are interested

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

this one is a heavier song but I feel like this one did not capture our live sound as much but hopefull with vocals and bass and mixing it will be in your face.

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

To my ears, H & F sounds as if it could benefit from fretless bass.

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

really? interesting we could try that since we have not recorded the bass yet. I can go rent one at my local shop

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

This is for "Hopeless and Free". I'll comment on Polar later.

Drums need a little bit of work but are entirely passable and plausible at this point. Actually it's just the cymbals that are too loud... not too loud but just need some smoothing out with a little subtractive EQ. Then take the highs and mids for the kick drum and crank them until they punch a hole in your chest. The snare sounds great and it could only use a little more attack and a big ol' raise in the mix.

Guitars are GREAT! Songwriting is solid and engaging... sort of like Jawbox meets Hum. I really dig the vibe and writing which are the most important things anyway.

Oh and really good playing as well.

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

thanks for the advice zenmindbeginner !

I can for sure relay the drum idea to my friend who is doing the mixing. I really like the guitars too, I always wanted to make some recordings that sound great cranked with headphones and in cars and so far it sounds great and its still rough! Thanks for the compliments!

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

this is some killer stuff man!! I also hear Kyuss in the first, and some early QOTSA in the second. my tips are to just buy an entry level bass for $120 on musiciansfriend and some software and start learning basic mixing, that way you will have a lifelong skill long after the EP :) Software I like: ozone 5, reaper, ezmix, glisseq from voxango

Re: Opinions on DIY EP recording

thanks everdrone! I will check out those softwares. I have 3 engineer friends so I may get it mixed by them once vocals and bass are recorded. I'm super excited to get these tracks done though, they are 2 of my favorite songs to play live!
