opinions on marshall 1960a?

Hey guys,

I'm slowly but surely building myself a rig and I was sort of in the market for a nice sounding 4x12. From what I can tell I can't get much employee discount on a new cab at G.C. (700 for a mesa) so I was gonna look into a used mesa standard. Today however I was browsing through inventory and I can get a used(has a couple small tears in the tolex) 1960a slanted for only 275. Should I be jumping all over this? I was pretty sure I wanted a v30 loaded cab and the amp I plan on getting soon is a rectoverb. I've heard g12-t75's can be brittle for leads and honestly I'd like to avoid that but for the price should I jump on it and then maybe do an x-pattern or something? How does this cab stack up to recto standard for both live and recording purposes?

It worked great for thousands of bands, so at $275, jump on it immediately.
Later, you could sell two of the G75Ts, and buy 2 Vin 30's, then do a crisscross pattern. There's nothing wrong with the stock speakers. They have great lows and crunchy highs. With a couple Vin 30's in there, it'll bolster the mids, and then you'll have the best of both worlds. The Bogner Ubercab has that setup.

Some people knock the 1960A, but ask youself how many times you've seen one or several onstage?? Yeah....buy it.

Wait a minute - are you telling me there are speaker cabinets that are not Marshall 1960'S?

Re: opinions on marshall 1960a?

Go for it!!! Thats a pretty good deal!!! GJ is right no matter what people say about the 196oA and it's stock speakers, you've seen them on countless tours and heard them on even more recordings!!!

Re: opinions on marshall 1960a?

Heck yes, jump all over it!

For that price you can get rid of those 75's, and put what ever you want in there.

As far as I'm concerned Marshall is the real deal, everything else is a copy.

Re: opinions on marshall 1960a?

I have a 1960A that I got for 300 with the stock speakers. It sucked. Lemme rephrase....the speakers SUCKED. The cab was a little on the top end too. I replaced the speakers with Hellatone V30's and padded the inside and that cab is almost as good as my Hughes and Kettner cab. That's saying a LOT.

I've got the 1960 AX with greenbacks. Awesome cab, looks the business too!

I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Hell yeah, grab that sucker. The Marshall cabs are what all others want to be, IMO. I wish I had a 1960A to match up with my JCM900 MkIII head. Those 75's sound great with it.

Cool thanks guys. I'm gonna do layaway tomorrow morning and get it with my next check. I'll do the uberkab pattern eventually but actually when I tested it today with my guitar and a rectoverb it sounded really nice. Will definitely do the trick for the price.
