Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

I've seen that video a while back and I think the guitar looks real cool. I own a lot of guitars but no offset ones. What do you personally like about offsets?

I find them aesthetically pleasing, and they look so different than the norm. My Jazzmaster is very comfortable to play sitting or standing as well.

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

The body shape looks good.

I don't like the large headstock or the pickups. They're trying too hard. It looks kitschy, when they should be going for classy IMO.

Also, they call the blue Daphne Blue, but it looks more like Sonic Blue to me. Sonic is pastel, Daphne is saturated blue. If I never see another pastel colored Fender, especially Sonic Blue, I'll be just fine.

A set of regular Strat or Jaguar pickups, a small headstock, and more heavy colors, and it'd be really nice.

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

I like the body shape, but I'm not a fan of the HSS and Strat bridge. If I were building my own version I'd do JM pickups or P-90s and either a Jazz/Jag tremolo or a Mustang Tremolo

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

It looks like a cool guitar. I'd be happy to give the maple on maple one a go.

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

It's Mexican costs ~$1k with tax

Pickguards will be hard or impossible to find, taking away an integral part of the Fender ownership experience

Also, imho, they should have gone with a Tele headstock not that 70s monstrosity

Uhm yeah no thx

Looks somewhat similar to an offset shape I've been working on for my own build:

When you think about it the Stratocaster design was actually based off the Precision bass guitar. I guess it took all these years for a Jazz bass to guitar version.;)

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

I really like the smaller offset Jazz body (but then I also really love my Jazz bass), but I hate the headstock with a passion. IMO it would be much better with the Am Strat small headstock. Not quite sure if I like the vintage tuners.

I'd have to play it to decide about the pups, they didn't sound all that great over my poor laptop speaker. But in any case I think I would add a split to the bridge pup, probably with a p/p tone pot if there is enough body depth available. I've got no problems with the trem, but would prefer a 2 point trem.

I also like the master vol and tone configuration.

The model used in the photo on the OP's link could use a neck tweak...note the high "E" string is just about off the side of the neck. That makes it totally unplayable above the 7th fret.

Wow, I guess I'm about the only person here who likes the large headstock on the Sixty-Six. I would however chance the pickups on it to something completely different from the norm. I was thinking two nickel covered humbucker-sized P90s or a set of 3 Jazzmaster pickups.

I am not a fan of the headstock, but I like the body better than most offsets, which I inherently don't like.

I too like the CBS style headstock, but I know lots of people think it looks wrong. I would go with different pickups as well, and the reason I wont be buying one and instead would be building it, thought I haven't decided on what kind of pickups I would want. that being said 2 phat cats might be cool. I also wouldn't have a trem as I never use them anyway

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

I've had mine for a while so here's what I think.

I played it and just fell head over heals in love with the comfort and the sound. Here's the honest pro's con's list as I see it

What I like about the lineup is versatility, comfort, looks, and the controls are out of the way (my only gripe with the strat design)
what I don't like, aside from the normal strat stuff (bent saddles, square heel, trem) is the bridge humbucker has a lower output than the single coils and is kind of squeely with lots of gain.

I've decked the trem, installed GFS saddles, graphtech string trees, and am shopping for the right HB to pair with the single coils. the stock one is fine but for my use I like to be able to slam the switch down to the bridge and have something that will punch through the mix.

But at the end of the day the reason I bought this axe is it totally had the mojo. I played another sixty six that didn't do it for me, this one just sings like it has lungs.

The only difference between this and a hss strat in practical terms is looks, control placement, and you get a couple tele coils instead of strat coils with the hb. all of that is what sold me.

I like the big headstock too. Not crazy about the Tele pups though. I'd probably swap them out for lipstick-tubes to retain the look. I especially love this in the Natural color.

I really don't need more GAS right now. :D

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

I dislike tele neck pickups and the CBS headstock isn't my favorite. I'm going to have to pass on this one.

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

An interesting curiosity.

Call me when you actually meet someone who owns one, let alone playing out / recording with it.

Re: Opinions on the Fender Alternate Reality Sixty-Six

it looks cool but tele neck pups are a no go for me
