Opinions on the Marshall MG50DFX

I am looking to buy one of these, what do people think of them?

It's either this or a Roland Cube 60, though I am open to suggestions. Though saying that, if I can persuade my Dad to cough up a bit more, a MG100DFX might be plausable.

I tried the 100 watt head version, and didn´t like it at all to be honest.
I would suggest looking into a used tube amp instead, but if not, i think the roland is supposed to sound better then the mg series marshalls.

Meeehhhhh.... MGs ain't very good. What sort of music are we talking about? And what setup do you have now?

Don't have any experience with the Cube, tho I've been looking into one.

the MG's are OK. Reliability seems to be an issue with them tho. The 100 watter has a few more options for getting different tones, and better headroom, which is good cos these sound horrible when the speaker starts to overload (and they overload quickly). I did hear one that some guy had put a much better speaker in (Eminence somethin or other IIRC) and the difference in tone was striking. Def made for a much nicer amp.

Been thinkin of grabbin one myself jes for late night practice. They are good lower volume bedroom amps, or for a first "decent" amp.

Actually, now I read Jeff's post, I did hear of someone who upgraded the speaker in his MG and made it sound better. Still not sure if they're worth it, tho.

I'd prefer the AVT over the MG series though.
I guess its a better deal to invest into an AVT instead =)

go for an avt, much warmer sound, better speakers, lovely overdrive and clean channels.

Talking about metal mainly, stuff like Maiden and Metallica. I currently have a little 15w Marshall which got the job done when I just started, and I was using a Squier. I just want a 'decent' amp now I have a 'decent' guitar (Fender Strat).

How much is this MG series Marshall, and where does it fit compared to their "Valvestate" series? All I know is that my friend's first amp was a Valvestate 100W combo and that piece of junk blew a cap, an output transformer and had at least one stratchy pot. We did nothing malicious or harmful to it either. Not to mention when it was working properly it sounded thin and raspy. One time it went bad at a gig and we had to borrow someone else's amp. The next day we fixed it, sold it on ebay and bought a Line 6 Spyder.

Now, the Line 6 is no replacement for a good tube amp. BUT, for like $300 it's not too bad, good for bedroom, rehersal and gigs, and it's been reliable.

Stay far, far away from the MGs. The AVTs are ok sounding but majorly overpriced. I've owned a Cube 60 for almost a year and a microcube for even longer, and they're both fantastic - especially for metal! The MGs win my award for worst amps, period.

The MG's don't do an nice smooth overdrive, i havent played the cube so i can't compare, but the MG overdrive channel is quite modern sounding and a bit buzzy. For me it does the job for practicing and i can use it in a band situation if i ever needed it as a backup amp (MG100dfx combo) but it really is no comparison to a tube amp (although its not supposed to be for the price). I'm not a great fan of the AVT range either, but have heard alot of great stuff about the cube, even though i have no first hand experience with it.

I'd say if you definatly can't stretch to a used tube amp, or need an amp that u can play quietly aswell, i'd test out the 3 mentioned amps and see which suits your purposes best, but definalty make sure you check out the cube.

Yea, dont even consider an MG series Marshall. The have decent gain for metal, but the distortion is tinny/buzzy sounding. Not at all good. The cube series rolands are much better imo. I also like the avt series marshalls, but havent played one in a couple years.

In that price range you could also look at the line 6 stuff, or the berhinger amps at quite a bit lower price than that marshall.

Since your in the market for an amp, play everything you can get your hands on, even in larger price ranges than you think you can afford. Once you make the purchase, that's it, and all the woulda couldas will start to set in if your arent completely happy with what you bought.

cube. IMO, Roland makes the BEST SS amps period. The Jazz Chorus gets the most badass clean tones, and the cubes are great all around amps.

go for the cube. MG distortion is crap. the only reason why i use my marshall is because i'm too lazy to bring the line 6s back and forth from band practice. If my mg215 had more headroom then it would be quite pleasing on cleans (in process of building a 4x8 sub enclosure to help this) but for metallica music go for something else.

Maybe not Metallica, but definately Maiden. Still go with the Roland if thats the kind of tone I'm after?

checkout my soundlick, thats an avt150, give you an idea of the distorted tone, i personally think its very nice and also versatile, and i own 2 very high class valve amps also.

Heard one the other day and was mighty impressed. Excellent clean and overdrive tones, and the effects were pretty decent as well. I dont know where you are based but in the UK the vox and marshall cost about the same, and between the two i would definitely go for the vox.
