Opinions on the Peavey ValveKings?

I've heard nothing but rave reviews about them, but what do you all think?
I'm thinking of getting a 212, certainly seems value for money. It would be a vast improvement on my studio pro 112...

I love it! It's light, keeps up with the loudest of drummers, and the gain on the lead channel covers a lot of tonal ground. The cleans leave something to be desired though. I just got an amp that's almost identical to the Valveking, except it uses EL34's! ;) I should have a thread with pics and whatnot up soon, I'm in the middle of something, so I can't spoil it! :D

Cool, that sounds good.
I'll keep a look out for that thread.
Is it only the tubes that are holding it back from sounding great clean?

Re: Opinions on the Peavey ValveKings?

Here's a link to a thread I had on some one take slow blues playing I did. It's all done with a strat style guitar and the peavey valve king 1x12. No pedals, nothing...microphone was set 4 feet away to get a little of the room ambience. Check it out for a bit of the tone.

Re: Opinions on the Peavey ValveKings?

wow, i hated it...at least the 1x12 i tried. i guess Peavey is going for the 'I always wanted a tube amp and this one is really cheap' market...but it has none of the complexity and dynamics that people are looking for when they buy a tube amp. it sounded flat and uninspiring to me.

Re: Opinions on the Peavey ValveKings?

It sounds like what you pay for...The fact that its a tube amp means yes it does sound good and tubey. However the price means that its nowhere near as good as most other highquality tube amps. If you want a a great tube head for 500 bucks or less go one ebay and pick up a Laney AOR series head. They are awesome.

Re: Opinions on the Peavey ValveKings?

hey Capo, what are your settings for that blues jam? I like the reverb on it, I haven't been able to find a good usable rever setting with the Valveking yet...

Totally +1!
If you search for stuff under my nickname you will see that I was shoping for Valveking, but than accidently I got a hold of Laney AOR Pro-Tube 50watt head (six knob one) for $400 and never looked back, I really do believe that if you are into classic metal or EPM there is no better amp for the money, really this thing is dark, loud, warm, with that unmistakenble british high gain, and the looks are so elegant. If you have a nice 4X12 you can't go wrong, Valvekin is good, but for the money, if you can get something that was made totally all in England in mid eighties how can you say no ???

I don't know, but remember the microphone is about 4 feet away from the amp so it's picking up some great room ambience, and that's where the reverb is really coming from. *shrug* It's got ok reverb on the amp, but I liked the room sound.

Re: Opinions on the Peavey ValveKings?

horrible sounding amp, woundnt sound good with any guitar that i tried it with.

Heh, I got my classic 50 for $500 NEW.

Shop around man, there's deals to be had, and the valve king isn't one of them. I wouldn't pay more than $300 for it.
