Opinions please (odd pickup combo)

CTN

The Drama Dude
For my very warm sounding Ibanez Mahogany bodied set-neck (maple/rosewood) super strat:

Dimarzio X2N bridge (the old one with the nickel steel baseplate)
Burstbucker 1 neck (buddy is offering to trade for my DMZ PAF Pro)

I thought about keeping the PAF Pro but i'm kinda burnt out on it as I've had it many years and don't much care for it anymore.

I've read that the BB1 in the neck position can tend to be a bit dark, but I can mag swap to my heart's content with the BB

I have on hand:
A2
A3 polished
A3 roughcast
A4
A5
A5 roughcast
A5 unoriented/roughcast
A8
Ceramic

I'm thinking about putting in either a ceramic or A8 and putting it in parallel (might have to do some surgery for that one since it comes with a 2-conductor lead), or keep it in series and put an A4 or one of the A5s in.

I'm looking to get a sound out of the BB that is sweet and bright enough to cut through, without getting muddy.

Thoughts? suggestions?

I like the A4 in a BB1 or BB Pro neck. Depending on what sound I'm after, I'd use a polished A3 in a muddy-prone semi- or full-hollow, or an UOA5 in a LPC.

I don't like the X2N. Never have, never will.

HTH,

Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: Opinions please (odd pickup combo)

I like BB1's as is, but if you need to brighten yours, an UOA5, A4, A3, or A5 will do that.

Re: Opinions please (odd pickup combo)

what aboot output matching? would the burstbucker be too underpowered a match for the x2n?

Check it, you will be surprised how much power a BB1 A5 has. In case there is really a mismatch you have several options: Put down the X2N and bring up the BB. Second bring down the volume pot of the X2N (and be sure you have a 500k+ volume pot on the neck. Third hook off the neck volume and tone pot (i did that on my main Les Paul).

Re: Opinions please (odd pickup combo)

good call...

I asked the dude to let me know if it was an older BB1 that would be ~8K or a newer one at ~7.5K. not much of a difference, but it would probably be noticeable next to an x2n.

he hasn't gotten back to me yet
