I've always been an Anglophile when it comes to amps, but I have never owned an orange. I play a Line 6 Helix right now, but I'm getting to the point where I want a real deal amp on stage. I'm still probably going to use the helix as an effect platform and backup to my amp. but to the point, which amp should I get. I know tubes are always more natural sounding, warmer, etc...but, which would serve me better considering price point, reliability, upkeep, and so on. I've played them both and they sound amazing. Just curious how the forum peanut gallery will weigh in.

I play in a classic rock cover band (70s &80s) and a modern stoner/doom metal band. In the classic rock outfit, I have access to really nice PA...the doom project, not so much

To make best use of Helix you'd want the Crush 120. That would allow you to make use of all the modeling as well.

Rocker 32 seems like awesome amp if you want to move in to more traditional tube amp setup. Worth of trying surely.

I don't want to use the helix amp models (outside of being a backup) I want a majority of my tone to come from the amp. Just use the helix for modulation effects and the like

Re: Orange crush pro 120c vs orange Rocker 32

I have the Crush Pro 120 head. It's really good. I didn't expect that it would be such a great pedal platform. The clean tone is beautiful. The drive tone is very usable and versatile and goes all the way from classic rock up to full-on doom. I didn't like the 120 paired with the Vintage 30-loaded PPC112 cab (too honky), so I might prefer it paired with a Voice of the World (more neutral EQ'ed) speaker, which is the configuration you're looking at if you're considering the 120 combo.

IMO, the Rocker 32 offers a good clean tone and a decent drive tone that's voiced way more towards rock than metal. Despite Orange's reputation as a doom machine, I don't think the Rocker 15 or 32 are the right tools for that job. The OR15H is an amazing stoner/doom machine. You may want to give that a look.

The solid state/tube tradeoffs will probably still be around for a while - lower cost/upkeep/weight for the former vs. greater cost/upkeep/weight/3D tone for the latter. If you lean more rock vs. stoner/doom, then the Rocker 32 might be the better tool for you. If you're 50/50 for rock vs. stoner/doom, or lean towards stoner/doom, then the Crush Pro wins.

A tube amp will, 99% of the time, sound so much better. It's the sound that we are all chasing after. But that being said you can NOT beat the cr60 and cr120, especially in the price range.

If you wanted a studio amp for recording I'd say Rocker 32 but since you want a stage amp get the Crush. Then, eventually, get a Rockerverb and use the Crush as an emergency backup.

Re: Orange crush pro 120c vs orange Rocker 32

I would probably say the Rockerverb as well from what you said in the original post. I like the Rocker 32 but it just misses something for me and I LOVE Orange amps,

My buddy has the CR120 and he digs the hell out of it. HE does tons of cover stuff with it and it sounds great no matter what I hear him do. Mostly Classic Rock towards the Rockin side.
