Orange Tiny Terror Score!

If there's one thing I love, it's amps. Of course, I love everything else too, but amps more than anything. It's because they're modern day sonic works of art.

I'm always playing the ones I own, and never stop searching for cool classics.....amps that define a sound, a style of music, and are benchmarks.

I've always somehow overlooked Orange amps. I've always plugged into them and appreciated them, but just never connected completely. So today, I stopped by my local GC since it's used section has been good in recent times, and spotted an Orange Tiny Terror 15/7W head in perfect condition for $299! I hooked up an ES-339 and Carvin Legacy 412 with it. I was really intrigued by it's 3 knob simplicity, yet very toneful gainy character.
It's just a beautifully voiced, fat sounding, rock machine! It's definitely it's own thing, because as great as it sounds, it doesn't sound like any of my other amps.

I took it apart, cleaned it, and saw what good quality it is....heavy duty switches, high end PCB construction, etc. It sounds great with it's cheap Chinese tubes, so I can't wait to see how I can tailor it to my liking with my stock of old stock EL-84's and 12AX7 and lower output pres. This amp has tons of natural full on tube gain, so swapping tubes will give a dramatic difference. It instantly sounded better at home, since my SG Diablo, Strat, and Bogner 212 let me fully hear the amp's range.
Real tube gain with a strat's 5 positions is always nice.

Look at the reviews the Tiny Terror has gotten! 5 Stars across the board. It's a good amp!

Here's the amps I currently own. I've owned around 85 amps, so this is my cream of the crop. All of them are well tubed, biased, and sound killer. Soon, I'll start posting sound samples. Up till now, I haven't done that because I lost my studio, and won't do crappy low volume stuff. I'm doing some songs in a good studio soon, and the owner is my friend, so I'll use some of that time to do a sound sample of each of these. He offered that time for free because he's interested in doing it.

i've always liked that amp...that's a good deal on it too!

NEW STUFF ROCKS!!! :headbang:

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Here's a good representation of it with a LP and Strat.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Nice score Joe. I have an early, mint and boxed one sat here along with a Dual Terror I take to rehearsals and you're right.... they rock! I played a mini festival gig last weekend and a mate in another band used an old Ibanez Blazer > Wah > Dual Terror and he sounded awesome! I should really set the Orange amps up in stereo one day :scratchch

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

glad you joined the ORANGE CLUB :)

Orange is the best amp for me. I want a dual terror, great tube tone in a lightweight package!

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

cool deal - first wave of lunchboxes! (was it the first, or the epiphone?)

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Those are cool amps. I borrowed a buddy's for a little while and ran it through my 2x12 with CL80's. it definitely had a singing tone. Was really impressed with it.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Nice score! Congrats, lad.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; if those amps had an effects loop, I would've added one to my collection a long time ago.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

The little Terror amps (and Oranges in general) have impressed me a lot. I would love to have a Dark Terror, #4 or even the TH30. I really like all the clips I've ever heard of them all.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Always liked the Tiny Terror.

Sonically, how would you characterize its voicing compared to your Marshalls and Fender? My two main amps are the EAST Studio 2 (think classic Budda Super OD territory) and L'il Dawg Champster (Champ clone). I've been thinking about adding another amp and was leaning towards another L'il Dawg, but this has me intrigued as I've never owned an EL84 amp before.

Go after an OR15 then - I'm pretty sure that has the loop.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Yup.Very cool amps.congrats Joe. Came close to buying one, but lack of loop is what nixed it off my list it as well. I just hate running my delay out front.

That OR15 is supabadass.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

I've been using the TT combo with G12H30 speaker in the rehearsal studio, and it sounds fab with my Fret King Esprit. I took my Voodoo Lab Superfuzz with me the first time, to give myself some gainier options and ended up just flicking between the Jazz and C/59 and tweaking the guitar's volume to get my sounds. I've had an eye on the Dual Terror for quite a while now...

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

I really wanted to like the OR15 but it has way too much gain too low down on the gain knob to be of any use to me. It's a whole different thing to a Tiny Terror - it seems to have at least as much gain as the Dark Terror and it really doesn't do cleans and is pretty hard to dial in a light overdrive sound; the gain ramps up so fast that turning the knob up by the smallest possible amount adds gain more quickly than I can use.

I guess if all-out dirty rock is your thing then (and you have another amp for cleans) it's probably great though...

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

Sonically, how would you characterize its voicing compared to your Marshalls and Fender? ............ but this has me intrigued as I've never owned an EL84 amp before.

It doesn't sound anything Fender-like....even it's cleans are clearly uber British. Marshalls are less dense sounding. I'd say the Tiny Terror has a real Tony Iommi quality to it. Thick, dense, and crunchy. When backed down, it's got the AC/DC thing down pat.

The thing about this amp is that it's preamp and power stage meld together in a way that's hand in hand. You're hearing the perfect blend between the two sections, and that's why I'm sure Orange opted to leave off an FX loop.
I think they felt the power section is so saturated that putting a loop before it would have yielded a muddy sounding effect in the loop......not much cleaner than running a reverb or delay into the front.

My EH Holy Grail gets gained up running into the front, so it only sounds good on less than 1, otherwise it's too surfy. My T Rex Replica delay sounds good, but it's analog character is almost too warm for the Orange.
I think that the amp sounds best around Angus Young level with a good OD in front for solos, and no reverb or delay.
If I want a Sabbath tone, I just turn up the amp's gain. I think the two pedals that work the best with it are the MXR Classic OD and Boss DD-7 delay. They're very clean and neutral sounding pedals.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

I've always found Trebleboosters to work very well with Orange amps, my AD30 sounded great having it's butt kicked by a treblebooster!

Re: Orange Tiny Terror Score!

I love my TT, got it almost exactly a year ago. I've yet to try different tubes- any recommendations?

It honestly sounds so good with the stock Chinese tubes that I'm hesitant to mess with it.
But, I'm sure JJ EL-84's will be the first choice. I'll go through about 8 preamp tubes to see which ones rise to the top, then leave them in there.
