Orange is one of those Companies I've never paid much attention to until recently.

I played a Tiny Terror Combo in GC last year and was completely underwhelmed. It must have been my preconceived notion that this amp was gonna be the High Gain Beast in a lunch box like the name suggests (C'mon Tiny Terror???). The TT pure and simple is a no frills straight up Rock Amp with a misleading name. I'll have to give it another chance someday. However.....after getting a setup done on my soon to be unveiled NGD at my favorite local Mom and Pop Guitar Store, I plugged into an Orange Rockerverb 50 MKII into a closed back Orange 2x12 with Vintage 30's to see how I liked the setup work that was done. Seriously. That Amp delivers the tonal goods, beautiful cleans to mild overdrive to driving mid gain rock tones to drop tuned punch you in the throat Rage Gain. I want. Bad.

Congrats on the TT GJ!! That's a great price too.

I loved my TT. Loved it so much I ended up getting a TH30. Th30 is great at low volume,goes down to 7 watts too. I do enjoy the extra gain the th30 offers as that was my only complaint with the TT. My Marshalls are now collecting dust and I love my orange amps

I tried many different Orange amps and was impressed. I now have an Orange Rocker 30 head that is killer. I like it more than my Marshall '79 JMP 2204 which says a lot. The vintage low mid voicing it has is incredible. If I was to get another Orange it would be the Dual Terror.

I haven't tried the combo, but I think the circuit is identical. The TT has enough gain to do 80's rock/metal, but if you want more of a modern metal tone, the Dark Terror and Jim Root #4 will take you there.
I read that Jim Root uses Rockerverb heads, and that his #4 was voiced to sound like them.

For me, the Tiny Terror does the Sabbath thing, the XTC red channel does the Cantrell sound, my 50W Jubilee does the highgain Marshall sound, and the Valvetronix head has a good Dual Rectifier model. I'm not all about high gain, but with those 4 heads I'm able to capture the universe of gain.

Those 4 amps will do great cleans too, but if I want truly sweet cleans, the Fender Pro Reverb, Matchless, and Gibson Goldtone are all benchmarks for beautiful cleans.

My main rig in my band now is a tiny terror and Marshall 1936 cab. It's a great setup. The single tone control can be a little difficult in a two guitar situation like mine - the other guitar player has a 5150 half stack and emgs. We are trying to downsize him as its a leftover rig from his last band.

Anyway, great tones from it and it takes pedals well. I used it all last practice at 7 watts and had the vol just over halfway. Stock tubes are pretty good. I'm interested in what a set of gold pin pre's and a matched set of el34s would do though.

I'm not a big fan of P90's at all, just don't dig the sound. I bought a Ovation electric with P90's to flip, when I tested it on my TT I fell in love, sounded so killer. Never flipped the guitar because of the way it sounded through my Orange.

Played through one at Truetone in one of their little rooms, didn't like it, but it sounded better than the Dr. Z's I played that day. It had a kind of boxy sound to it that I don't like. But, in any case, nice score if you're into it! I enjoyed reading your write-up.

I've always thought that Orange's Tiny Terror series was awesome bang for the buck. And for the amount of wattage, they get pretty LOUD! Good gigging amps for small venues and even bigger ones if you mic them up.

I just spent the past hour with the top off the Tiny Terror, so I could pop tubes in and out. I have all my favorite tubes sorted into one bag, but I started with pre tubes so the power tubes would be what I've been used to for a week.

Phillips 5751 to tame the gain sort of cut the edge off the highgain, so I went the other direction. I want all the highgain potential there, but be able to roll off the gain if I want less. I tried JJ ECC83, Ruby 12AX7A, GT-M, GT-C, Chinese Bugera 12AX7A, and ended up with the Groove Tube 12AX7 C in the first position.

I ended up liking the JJ ECC83 in the PI position, because it really doesn't matter, but it was the smoothest.

It had Bugera EL-84 Chinese tubes in there, and they really do sound hot and punchy. Then, I went back and forth between my Mazda Belvu Telefunkens from the 50's or early 60's and my old stock Mullards that had a chance of being worn.

I ended up going with the old stock Mullard EL-84's because of their sweet highs, tight bottom, and overall great tone.
The Belvu's were just as good, but I decided to hold onto those for later. Mazda Belvu tubes are the best I've ever come across. I've got one of the Belvu 12AX7's in my Matchless's 1st position.

The reason I've got some of those good old tubes are because I raid them from old movie cameras at work.
My boss likes to buy vintage movie cameras, then chrome them for lobby displays. He lets me strip all the tubes out of them. I end up with Telefunken, Mullard, RCA, Phillips, Sylvania etc.

Holy Moly that sounds great. Especially the hard Rock gain. Doubt I'd trade it for my Old Traynor Bassmate. The Trayonr Is THE perfect practice amp, if you are used to old late 60's/early 70's Plexis ( it wont get the amazing classic tight JCM/old Orange late 70's /early 80's sound like the Tiny Terror) but its a lil Mini25 watt Plexi, with tons of sag- you play the amp right through your guitar strings in a very touch responsive dynamic way modern amps have a hard time doing-a "tweedlike " response.The el84's saturate at very low volume , and gets that old unmistakeable fat loose balls out sound of a Plexi, and while you may not be able to crank it in the apartment, its a very quiet, by my standards, amp.
I love that Tiny Terror though, its the perfect late 70's/early 80's and beyond amp! I oughta get me one .

The TT really benefits from NOS tubes. Especially nice EL84's. great score on a great amp. Enjoy it!
