ordered a peavey super 7 tube and got a JJ lol

Re: ordered a peavey super 7 tube and got a JJ lol

I keep hearing this about Tung-Sols but in five or six years and three different amps with them in every position, I've never had one go bad
Have you used them in the cathode follower position in a Marshall type amp? They tend to die there most because they can't handle the voltage differential between the cathode and heater (not the grid as I originally posted).

I've had a Tungsol ECC803S in the cathode follower of my JCM900, but it's only been there for about 7 months. I've had a complete set of 7 ecc803s' in my Boogie MkV for about 2 years, and a set of standard 12ax7 in my peavey 3120 for five years. All of those amps have all tungsol pretty and power tubes in them except the peavey which has EHX El34s, also my H&K TM18 has tungsol pre's and stock Chinese el84s and I just remembered that my Fender HRD has tungsol 6L6GCs w/ Fender/GT 12ax7s.

How did the person explain that one?

Sadly people try that crap a lot a friend of mine once bought an amp off ebay when the box showed up it looked too small to use so we had the UPS guy hang on while we cut it open and there was a brick and a chunk of wood in the box. The seller tried to say that UPS stole it and put the crap inside the box.

My experience with UPS would tend to make me side with the guy selling the amp. YMMV.

You know, I was about to tell you that you must be thinking of the JJ ECC803S or maybe the old Telefunken but then I looked it up and there is indeed a Tung-Sol ECC803-S. This tube has gold pins and possibly corrected the cathode-to-heater voltage differential issue that the regular Tung-Sol 12AX7.

Unless they fixed that issue with the regular Tung-Sol, but I doubt that since New Sensor still hasn't fixed the same issue with the Sovtek 12AX7LPS.

They don't all die. Some get lucky enough to go beyond their design spec and live up to the actual 12AX7 spec, which calls for up to 200V difference between the heater and the cathode.

And let me correct what I said above (which I did in my last post). It's a differential in voltage between the cathode and the heater filament, not the grid.

I also stopped rolling the dice ordering from musicians friend, ams, et. al. and order from tubedepot so I can get lager matched sets and matched & balanced triodes

Only places I've ever ordered tubes from are The Tube Store, TubeDepot, Antique Electronic Supply/Amplified Parts/CE Distribution, and... Where did I get the SED (when they were called Svetlana) 6L6GCs I had in my Dual Showman... Man, that was '99-2000... I forget. LOL

matched & balanced triodes

So you spent 5 extra bucks for nothing. Only in the PI slot would balanced triodes make a difference. Its just another way for tube sellers to soak a bit more money out of you.

I think The Tube Store and TubeDepot actually state that such would be a reason for matched triodes.

I'd also do it if I were building a mini amp with triode pairs in class AB.

As far as the PI... Look at the plate resistors in most amps (not Silverface Fenders). One is 82K, one is 100K. There's actually a purposeful mismatch in the gain structures of each side of a PI, so matched triodes doesn't really help anyway.

$2.00 and only for the PI, and sometimes the reverb and loop tubes
