Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

In all likelyhood I'm going to order a brand new neck for my Stratocaster. I have a good idea of what I want already (Maple neck/fretboard, possibly a scalloped fretboard; if not some cool inlays and stainless steel frets, etc.) but I'm not sure which back shape to get.

See, I've got quite small hands for a guitar player. Scales are tough to play, especially higher up on the neck. I try to accomidate for it by doing a lot of Rhoades-like sliding but overall I find that the on my Les Paul and even on my Strat (obviously the latter has a much thinner neck) I have trouble playing some leads, especially while standing up. I was thinking of getting a different back shape when I order my Warmoth neck.

I was looking at the Wizard contour but I'm not sure because I've played it before (upside down, I'm a lefty!), and it appears that extensive chording (esp. power chords) would wear my hand down rather quickly. And scalloping isn't avalible on Wizard models at Warmoth. I was intrigued by the Wolfgang Contour - I've heard its real comfortable but I've never played one before... It's just a bit bigger than a normal Strat, right?

So what's your suggestion for a player with small hands? :smack:

Also - scalloping (from the 12th fret up) good or bad idea? Going by what Warmoth has to say, along with numerous reviewers, it seems like a great idea.

Also what's the deal with Pau Ferro fretboards? Anyone have one?

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

The Wolfgang neck is supposed to be asymetrical, that is, thinner on the treble side than on the bass side. I'm not sure what would work for you, since I have big hands. I liked the contour on the Peavey Wolfangs I've played, it's a very fast neck with enough meat to dig in when needed.

As far as Pau Ferro, I beleive it's related to rosewood, but will be harder and brighter as a fingerboard material.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I have short stubby fingers, and I like the Warmoth standard thin profile.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

You might want the Wolfgang neck profile if you have small hands. If it's anything like the EVH Music Man neck, you'll like it. The neck on that was like someone split a broomstick in 2! Be warned- if you ever want to have that scalloped fretboard re-fretted, expect to pay some serious ca$h!

Why not just go with some exotic woods? Birdseye maple with abalone dots looks stunning on strats!

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

If u can get past the "no scalloped" option, I highly recommened the 24 3/4 in. conversion necks that Warmoth offer.
Especially for cats who have trouble palming a basketball.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I have small hands, and the standard thin is fine for me, too.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I have smaller hands, and I really like the standard thin profile of the Warmoth neck. I find it considerably thinner than the "Modern C" on my Highway 1 strat. I wouldn't want anything thinner than the standard thin from Warmoth. I've only played a Wolfgang once, but the neck was nice. My only beef with it was the fretboard was too skinny...not enough room between strings.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

a scalloped neck helps small hands...get stainless steel frets and don't ever worry about re-fretting. I say go for it.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

What about fingerboard radius? That could have a huge affect as well, and warmoth can make a fingerboard with any noncompound radius... fender necks are 9.5" and gibsons are 12", right?

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I agree with Jeff, the Wolfgang neck is very nice, not too thin or too thick. But I would go with a wider fretboard, the 1 5/8 nut width on the Wolfgang is a little too narrow for rhythm work. My Hamer has a shorter scale and a wider nut, and I find it much more comfortable to play closer to the nut.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

How would I go with a wider fretboard - should I just get a larger nut width? Maybe 1 11/16 or even 1 3/4 ??? That should do the trick ,right?

Warmoth won't do stainless steel frets + scalloped neck. It's one or the other. I'm not sure which.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I didn't see anything on the site that excluded stainless steel frets from being installed on a scalopped fretboard...just that stainless steel frets are a $20 upcharge for installation.

Also, the wider nut width will get you the wider feeling fretboard.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I checked out the neck order form, and only fret wire 6100 is avaliable with a scalloped neck - and that's not stainless steel!

Out of the two I wonder what's worth it - I've never played a scalloped neck before, Stainless Steel would be the safer bet.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

Remember, stainless steel is a little brighter than nickel. I started a thread about stainless steel frets the other day, and I ultimately decided to go with nickel frets. As for scalloping, I would suggest trying a guitar with a scalloped fretboard before you order a scalloped neck. It's definitely a different feel, you may or may not end up liking it.

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

You mentioned playing upside down since you're a lefty.....

Unless you get a left-handed Wolfgang shape, you might experience MORE trouble with a thicker treble side and a thinner bass side...

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

No no no no no I tried a righty Ibanez Wizard neck, I play lefty so this was very unnatural - I play lefty!

Re: Ordering a Warmoth neck - Suggestions?!?

I'd go with the standard thin profile.
I don't like those wizard necks one bit. My hand gets tired really fast when chording.

I have small hands myself, and i find necks with a round, but thin profile (just like the Warmoth standard thin) and 1 5/8 nut width the easiest to play.

And pau ferro is said to sound kinda like maple. In other words, bright.
