So after I switched the magnet in my PATB-1, (see other thread if you're interested) I got adventurous with the neck spot of my Strat. I had put the original bridge pickup there, with an A2 bar stuck under it. It was ok. Since I had two A5 bars lying around now, I decided it would be cool if I could pull the little ceramic mags off the bottom and strap one of the bar mags on. Well 20 minutes later, I had made little progress. I noticed the coils of my original SG pickups sitting in a box. I took one of the screw coils (I don't know if it was neck or bridge) and put the screws back in it, and then took the two A5 bar mags and put one on each side of the screws sticking out of the bottom of the coil. I ran some electrical tape around those to hold them together and then masking taped the whole unit together until there was enough tape to make the coil roughly fit in the hole in the pickguard. Then I took some glue (I don't know what kind... just some generic heavy duty glue) and adhered the pickup to the guard. After I got everything put back together, strung it up, and played with the PATB-1 for a while, I switched over to the neck pickup.
First observation: This is EXTREMELY microphonic. I can talk through it and hear it in the amp very plainly. I turned up the amp a bit expecting squealing, but got none. Granted, the amp wasn't THAT loud, but still...
Other observations: There is little bass going on, so it's pretty jangly sounding, and very weak (what i expected) but if I have some (not a lot) gain going on the amp, the extra amp signal makes up for the reduced pickup signal and I can get some pretty cool tones.
Bottom line: This guitar is going to be as it was before - 9 times out of 10, treated as a single pickup guitar. But that other time, I won't be upset about having this pickup in there, until I come up with a new mod to do.
