Re: OTHER than me who swaps pups a lot?

Even if I don't like it right away, I try to leave a pickup installed for atleast a month so that I can learn and adjust to how that pickup makes my amp react.

Re: OTHER than me who swaps pups a lot?

in the past i was swapping pickups almost every month............at one point i realised how many $$$$$ i have spent on pickups......i could have bought a good rack effect with the money..............it is easy to buy a pickup........it only costs 60-90 euros(most of them)........compared to what other gear costs.....:) ............so after a lot of € spent on pickups...i sold all of them.....and equipped all of my guitars with the pickup that had the qualitites i was searching for..... :) :) :) :)

Re: OTHER than me who swaps pups a lot?

Man...I'll need to look into those quick couplers.....it would sure make my life much easier!! I too am a certified pickup changing junkie. I can't leave well enough alone and always have a new pickup or two waiting in the wings to solder in. I'm not quite as abd as once a week, but a quick count confirms
( unless I forgot a few! ) 15 pickup changes in my #1 tele in the last two years. 6 bridge pups and 9 neck. I won't even go into my other gutiars! Last night saw another neck pup change.

Re: OTHER than me who swaps pups a lot?

Nope, it is just you Lester.

My problem is I keep buying Jacksons to host pickups when I find I like them. Currently running an Invader, Super Distortion, Super 3, Breed, Megadrive, Custom Custom, another Super Distortion and an EMG81.

The last, a soloist, I reversed the process. I got an Air Zone from "some guy" :) and am getting ready to install that and try that.

I'll keep you updated on how your pickup turns out in my Soloist. Hey, don't post this in public. :)

Random question.....

How would you compare the Super3 to the Breed?? I've used the Super3 and probably should stick with it but I just wondered what some of Dimarzio's other "mid-heavy" pickups sound like. Actually how does the Custom Custom compare as well if you don't mind...

Hey Ranalli,

Haven't talked to you in a bit. I bet you'll be cleaning snow off your the roof of your car soon so it doesn't effect other drivers, huh. :) The things you see when you travel the forums.

The Breed and the Super 3 have much of the same midrange sound, with the Super 3 being stronger in that region. The Breed is stronger in the bass than the Super 3, without getting muddy. They both lack the compression that the Tone Zone or the Evo have (I know you know what I mean here), more of a darker PAF eq. A guy who like a Super 3 can handle a Breed.

As you know here, SD and Dimarzios really sound different, but the Custom Custom is really eq'd alot like a Super 3, strong on the midrange, without as pronounced a midrange as the Super 3. The Super 3 has ALOT of midrange, a real lot. Anyway, the CC has the normal SD treble flavor, not as much as a Duncan Distortion (good comparison pickup), but a decent amount. The DD has more output than the CC, this output being focused from the mids through treble. The CC doesnt' have that wide of a range, less in the treble region, so by comparision the CC seems mid-heavy, but really just lacks that endless mid-to-top of the DD, if that makes sense.

EDIT: I can paraphrase it if you want. Breed more bass than Super 3, a little less mid. The CC has less treble than the DD causing it to seem more middy. But, I bet the snow on the roof of your car got ya. :)

I can't wait till I'm at that stage in life. Just SWAPPIN pups in and out all day long, playing guitar. I love guitar, and I should, it's apart of the job discription. Haha. I swap on a as needed basis.

This is good to hear....I might check out a Breed then. The CC might be an option too....I wish my Super3 just had a *touch* more treble.

Thanks:)

And no, it hasn't snowed here yet:)

Ah, you didn't remember the "cleaning the snow off your car" (Liability to the guy in back of you)thread from last winter.

Anyway, got Lester's Air Zone installed in my Soloist.

It has some of the qualities of an EVO. More open, little less power, with smoother treble. A fairly "Duncan" Dimarzio, if there is such a thing.

I like to live with a pickup a bit before making a decision. So good so far.

Great transaction by Wicked Lester, by the way.

Back on topic..... I don't really buy more pickups or guitars because of this forum, or other forums.

But, this forum does help me make more informed decisions, specifically on SD pickups.

Re: OTHER than me who swaps pups a lot?

I now have over 70 pickups, but I don't swap as much as I used to. I'm thinking about changing the pups in my #1 Tele from EMG's to something passive, maybe my Full Shred and the Hybrid I made... :)

You're not alone Wicked. I have the illness too!

Re: OTHER than me who swaps pups a lot?

I hear ya, and I've done some real anal hair splitting!!! LOL

After it all, I've realized I like these the best....59's, Seths, C-5, CC, Jazz's, Surfers, and other boutiques like Chubtone, Holmes, and Lollar. I'm still on the Tele quest.....Ant's, Broadcaster, 5/2's, JD.
My own guitar quest ended at Gibson, Fender, PRS, and Martin

I'll tell you what the main thing is....stop F'in around with mediocre amps!!!
Instead of chasing the tone through pickups and guitars, spend the rest of your days on amps. I know they cost a lot, but if you focus all your attention on the world's best amps, you'll find what you were looking for.
After messing around with a bunch, the ones that blow me away are...
Bogner
Matchless
Bruno
65 Amps
Fargen
Bad Cat
Top Hat
Blues Pearl
Victoria
