Out For Delivery

Re: Out For Delivery

How does the pro mod differ?? I know how the nitro is diff.. I love my QR more everytime I use it..

Congrats Adam! Cant wait for pron!

Re: Out For Delivery

Thanks guys...

It was delivered. My neighbor is holding it until I get home. I'm pretty psyched.

The Quick Rod is not very different from the standard Pro Mod... but very different from MY Pro Mod. My Pro Mod is a 1st gen with no "gears" switch, a shared EQ, and Mercury Magnetics transformers. The Quick Rod currently waiting for me, besides running on EL34s instead of KT88s, has the gears, separate EQs, and Heyboer transformers, respectively.

I'll post pics / tone report later.

Oh, I thought you had a QR?

Re: Out For Delivery

what the heck is a gears switch?

It's something that Splawn came up with. It's essentially different levels of gain or overdrive within a single channel, so you may have a two channel amp that has OD1 and OD2 on one channel and OD3 and solo boost on another channel, like that.

If I didn't explain that just right, will someone please correct me.

Re: Out For Delivery

He's probably cleaning out his drawers after he cranked that monster up. We might not hear from him until he's sure the stains came out and his pants are in the dryer.

Re: Out For Delivery

I haven't had much chance to let it rip yet. I did manage to get it all set up and put it through some low-to-mid volume paces for about 20 minutes this afternoon, but that was it.

I had a brief freak-out moment where the amp fired up just fine but no sound would come out! But a quick look in back revealed that a preamp tube had come unseated during shipping. Once that was firmly back in place, all was well.

From what I could tell, it sounds great. Very different character than the Pro Mod, surprisingly. Much smoother and more refined. Chewy. The bass and low-mids might slight slightly higher in the spectrum, hitting you with more of an immediate chest-thunk than the gut-whomp of the Pro Mod. I'm thinking the Quick Rod may actually sound fuller in a band mix due to it's money-freq sitting higher up out of the way of the bass.

The clean channel is dramatically different, obviously due to the dedicated EQ. Cool thing - the clean channel has volume AND gain control.. You can dial in a nice little bit of grit despite the massive headroom, and it's very lush.

The real fun will be getting both Splawns up and roaring for a show.

Not quite... The Quick Rod has two channels: Clean and OD. OD has two footswitchable modes: OD1 (rhythm) and OD2 (lead). The difference between the modes is just a pre-set gain boost.

The gears switch is a 3-position rotary switch that defines the preamp configuration of the OD channel. Gear 1 is supposed to be like a hot-rod Plexi; Gear 2 like a JCM 800, and Gear 3 like a modern high-gain amp with a classic Marshall voicing. Overall it's pretty convincing in all 3 gears but Splawns have more low end than you'd ever get out of a Plexi or 800.

Not the best, because it's overcast today and my shutter speed was a little slow...

Re: Out For Delivery

Seksie. Congrats man. What will be your total show rig now?

I find myself running the Quickrod on first gear with gain below half now. It works really well with the punch of the EL34's. Get the volume up and it's pure rock/early metal heaven.

Very nice, Splawn are getting very popular around here lately... and rightly so.

I'll probably be using the QR and the other guitarist in my band will continue to use the PM. As for cabs, whoever is on the side of the stage opposite our bass player will run through the big 6x12 and the other will have the Splawn 4x12.

The arrival of this new head has me thinking about ordering a matching unloaded Splawn slant 4x12 and dropping 4 of the WGS speakers from the 6x12 in it.

Re: Out For Delivery

Could you walk through the iterations of different rigs you've been using over the last couple of years now? Seems your lineup has changed more than the cast of Dr Who. LOL.

Re: Out For Delivery

I've had some amps come and go... yeah... but nothing close to the number of guitars I've had in and out of here!

Counting every guitar I own or have ever personally owned, I'll be taking delivery of #28 some time next week.

Lemme see... amps...

Marshal TSL60
Peavey 5150 blockletter
Mesa Road King I
Splawn Pro Mod (still have it)
Bogner Uberschall
Orange Rockerverb 100
Splawn Quick Rod (newest acquisition)

So that's really not all that many amps...

Re: Out For Delivery

cool looking amp. for some reason, I didn't think they had the low end of which you speak, but that was a preconceived notion.

You should be in the room with one. You feel it as much as hear it. Heavy palm mutes are like someone punching you in the chest.
