What guitar is going to be #28??

I like the gears/channel setup. I was running 3rd gear od 2 as Im a gain freak, but have settled on Gear 2 as 3 has alittle bit of hum..

Took me awhile to really get the diff tween Od1 and 2. Its more subtle than I expected..

I've had some amps come and go... yeah... but nothing close to the number of guitars I've had in and out of here!

Counting every guitar I own or have ever personally owned, I'll be taking delivery of #28 some time next week.

Yeah, not that many...but they're all pretty ****ing impressive pieces of kit.

Congrats on the new amp, dude. You need to get some live vids up here, it seems that your live sound must be monstrous.

I'd love to try one of these but I've never even seen one in person. I recall you saying your Pro Mod sounded like money with a mic on it... any amp that does heavy tones and records well I'd be interested in.

I think the difference between OD1 and OD2 is perfect. OD2 just adds enough extra gain to get a singing lead tone out of the rhythm sound you dialed in for OD1.

I think Splawn amps aren't quite as popular as some other boutique brands simply because they're NOT sold as "super versatile, will get you every tone ever, blahblahblah" ...They get that Splawn twist on the modded Plexi / JCM 800 / Van Halen I and II sound, and it's not for everybody.

What made you decide to sell the Uberschall? Did you just need more versatility and/or you needed to sell it to get a different amp, or was there something you about the Uber weren't copacetic with?

How does the Quick Rod cope with more of a 70s Rock tone? I know it'll do the 80s thing easilly, but the 70s thing is also a big thing to me, so it's kind of a decider as to whether I get 1 myself or not

Nah, I probably care the least about versatility from an amp out of everybody on this board..

As for getting rid of the uber... ultimately I just got sick of the lack of a sweet spot. It went right from not enough gain to way too much.. the mids also had a stiff, brittle character I couldn't dial out. I think I just prefer more british-style circuits.

Yeah, I expected a big difference tween od1 and 2 but instead its just a slightly diff voicing and alil more juice.. I love it now, but was suprised at first..

If you think about it, having those different "gears" IS a pretty decent amount of flexibility for any all tube amp IMHO. Most British voiced amps pick one sound to offer and stick with it. If they do give you options, they do a pretty poor job of it (like the DSL/TSL tone stack mod button IMHO) The QR gives you options galore in that respect. I find that to be quite impressive.

I don't know... gimme an example of what you mean by "70s rock tone."

If you think about it, having those different "gears" IS a pretty decent amount of flexibility for any all tube amp IMHO. Most British voiced amps pick one sound to offer and stick with it. If they do give you options, they do a pretty poor job of it (like the DSL/TSL tone stack mod button IMHO) The QR gives you options galore in that respect. I find that to be quite impressive.

That's a good point. In truth I'm still just getting to know that feature... As I said, my Pro Mod is pre-gears, which basically means it's 3rd-gear all the time I suppose. I'm enjoying the lower-gain settings on the Quick Rod because somehow it still feels like the saturation is there, it just sounds cleaner, if that makes any sense..

It makes perfect sense. Lower gain sounds heavier than we normally think it does when it's recorded. Sounds like the QR makes it so you can actually hear it.

..And feel it. You still get the sustain and immediacy as you would the higher-gain sounds. It's just less-distorted. The 1st gear has a bit less bass as well, but you can crank the bass knob a tad more to counteract this.

Honestly, the best feature that Splawns have over most other amps is what I would consider the best lead boost in the business. On the footswitch, in addition to Clean/OD and OD2/OD2, you also have the Solo switch, which activates OD2 and re-routs the signal to a 2nd independent master volume, kind of like the two "channels" on a JCM 900 Mk III. You can use that other master vol. to adjust your amount of lead boost to any level. My Pro Mod has that too and I've never come across another amp that does it as well.

Yes, absolutely right. By today's standards, bands like Black Sabbath and AC/DC are all about low/medium gain guitar tones, but I don't think anyone could accuse either of those bands of not being heavy enough.

"Heavy" is more about EQ than gain anyway.

Really? I'm trying to think back to my old Road King.. It had four channels but I'm not remembering how the solo boost was handled.. Of course, this was years ago and IIRC the thing had like a 7-button footswitch, so I wouldn't be surprised if you were right.

The only other Mesa amps I've ever been "intimate" with were the Mk IV, the Mk IIc, and the F-30...

...regardless, it's the way a solo boost should be done and yes, I find it essential. I really missed having that with the Orange - it would be my only real gripe about that head.
