Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

Just bought back a beat up Jackson Kelly and I decided to have some fun with it.

Short version, I bought a busted Jackson Kelly body on ebay with a caved in control cavity. I fixed the damage and put together a decent playing guitar from ebay -acquired parts and used it to try EMG pickups out.

I say only decent playing because I never did get used to that STUPID Floyd Rose bridge. I know, lots of folks love them, and more power to them, no offense meant. I just do not like them. Personal thing.

Anyways, I finally sold it to a co-worker for $125 because of that stupid Floyd. Kinda missed the neck, tho. Played very well.

Well, after 2 years, he doesn't like the Floyd either and mentioned he was going to pull the EMG's out and get rid of the guitar, so I told him I'd pull the EMG's for him, but I'd buy the guitar back from him. He banged it up some while he had it and sprayed it with cheapo black spraypaint, so he sold it back to me for $65.

Cool and all, I need a project, something to tinker with, but I still hate that damned Floyd Rose.

This is when the silly ideas form.

I had just swapped the Kahler 2300 on my Warmoth LP for a Kahler fixed bridge. Always wanted to try one, and the Warmoth was originally suppose to have one when I put it together 13 years ago, so what the heck. So where to put the 2300....:hmm:

Got the bright idea to mount it to the Kelly. I was at first just going to buy an adapter plate from Wammi World, but after test fitting it over the Floyd's route, I determined I'd have to shim the neck WAY up to accommodate the added height.

I remembered the recessed Kahler on the Jerry Cantrell G&L, so I decided to give it a whirl. Turns out I'm becoming pretty fair handy with a hand chisel :D

Didn't take any before or in progress pics, sorry. The ugly spots around the Kahler is just the crappy paint flaking and rubbing off, not chisel marks. I still have to clean up the area clearanced for the Kahler's springs, too.

And here's what I did today. While primering the body to try a dubious ''metallic burst'', I decided I really loved the color of the dark grey primer, so I'm going with that. just going to topcoat with some satin clearcoat. I'm thinking about making an Explorer-esque pickguard for it, might look pretty cool.

As for Pickups, I've got a Gibby 490R and a WB Habanero 2 prototype doing nothing right now, I think those will be going in.

The grey is a lot darker in person, but it seems to photograph about 2 shades too light. Weird!

DIY and bring the brewtullz! Punk-metal, dude!

I like the way you made the floyd route work for your Kahler.

You should fill in the neck pickup cavity while you're at it.

:D

Thanks. I was just sitting there looking at it and it hit me, "Just recess it a little". From there it was just a small matter of making the little cover plate. Good opportunity to practice with the chisel, too. Thak God for that weird dude on the New Yankee Workshop :18:

I thought about it, but I've got 6 one pickup guitars already. Besides, I'm feeling to lazy to mess with it.

Interesting mod, never seen that before.

Yet, putting grey over birdseye figuring is not my cup of tea. Some kind of translucent or natural finish would've been nicer.

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

it'd look even cooler with a reverse black-centered greyburst:naughty:

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

Cool! I'm not sure if leaving the grey primer as the main colour will work though - I was going to do something similar but asked a guy in a auto paint garage about it and he thought it might wear off too easy even once lacquered.
But then again maybe he didn't really understand what I was asking him.

I agree, but the birdseye actually looks like crap from 5 feet away and closer. It was my first veneering attempt, and it did not go well. Not at all. Also, the bevels make it really difficult to do any kind of burst finish that looks decent, unless I veneered them as well, and there is no way I want to tackle that job, so grey it is.

As for the mod, yeah, I'm an oddball. Not one I'd try on a nice guitar, but perfect for this thing. Anything I can do to rescue it from the horror of being Floyd equipped:naughty:

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

I'm afraid to ask. But what is that on the top right? And how did it come to be in the picture?

Left leg/knee with right leg/calf crossed over.

I hope. :D

Very nice....I always hated Floyd's but never had any grips with Kahlers!

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

Success!!!! Got her back together this afternoon, and as odd as this modification was, it was the best thing in the world for this guitar, at least for me.

The neck is playing as well and even better than before. Turns out the odd rattle it used to have on the low E string was caused by the crappy Floyd, now I've got the action lower than any other guitar I own except the Deluxe.

The Hab 2 pickup sounds really good with this setup, although I could stand it to be a touch tighter in this guitar. This is going to be an excellent guitar for E-flat duties.

The Kahler is a perfect fit for this guitar. Feels much more natural to me than the floyd ever did, no big surprise there tho. It is holding tune perfectly as well. The recess enabled me to mount the neck without shims, and the break angle is just where I like it on a Kahler.

Enough of my yakkin', here's some pics...

I'm going to get to work on an Explorer type pickguard for it, I think it would look better.

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

Thank you very much!! I didn't really miss this guitar while she was away, but I'm just pleased as punch to have her back now!!

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

Guitar turned out good! I've wanted a Kahler equipped guitar for a long time. Good job on getting the bridge recessed and the action set low. So are Kahlers easier to set up than Foyds?

Re: Out with the Floyd, in with the Kahler, Jackson Kelly content...

looks good. in that first picture of it completed, the lighting makes the headstock look like a natural maple finish with a big white logo. looks really cool like that:D

Well, yes and no. It's easier for me because I'm more familiar with them, but like a Floyd, they can be a royal pain the first time, especially finding the right spring vs. string tension. However, once you do get it in the first time, re-adjusting for tuning changes and switching string gauges is a breeze. Usually not more than a turn either way. You do all the adjusting on the top of the guitar, so that's a huge plus for me, too.

The other huge advantage is that you can adjust the saddles pretty much wherever you want them as far as spacing and radius.

Your'e right, I didn't notice that! Woul have looked cool if the veneer had worked out right.
