Overdrive and Dostortion question...

Currently I'm using an Orange micro terror head and 3 stages of gain, Behringer Tube overdrive, Mad Professor Golden Cello, and a classic Boss DS-1. I'm hearing a lot of people on YouTube that are putting these style pedals in from of an amp that is on the verge of break up. Is that the correct way to run a pedal of this nature or should a clean amp sound better? I'm running all pedals into the front of the amp if that helps.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a richer, complex tone with a looser, more ragged character, stacking your tube OD with light drive settings into an amp channel with moderate breakup is a good place to start. If you want bright crunch with full chunk and a tighter character, running the DS-1 with high saturation into a clean channel would be a better way to go.

I have the same amp. I know the volume is tied into the gain so I dial in light gain, and use a Soul Food for overdrive and a TS for boost. Sounds great.

There's no right or wrong, just what works for you.

If it's only got the one channel, and you actually do use cleans, and need more presence than what rolling the volume knob down gets you, set the amp for clean and use the pedals for the dirt.

If your volume knob works, set the amp for a little bit of hair and let the pedals accentuate that.


I will say that you can put the DS-1 last in the chain and drop the saturation down a bit and use the Tube OD to boost that into Solo or Heavier Rhythm territory. If it's set for more of a clean boost, then all you'd have to turn off is the DS-1.

A lot changes/variables change from one amp to another and even channels within the same amp.

For years I used similar pedals into a dead clean amp. Now I go into a distorted amp, but get cleans from the volume knob on the guitar. It is totally up to you, and there are great tones to be had doing it any way you want.
