The MXR stuff is pretty much always bang for buck, whilst not true bypass they are ,I believe, hardwired bypass... whatever they are they work pretty darn well. MXR classic overdrive would be cool, or you may even just get a MXR Micro Amp and goose the front end.

MXR GT-OD/ MXR Classic OD/MXR ZW-44 (MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive)

These pedals are 2 pedals in one box.
There is an internal switch to swap settings.
Modded my switch to be on the outside.

So basically you get the GT-OD which is the same as the Classic (or get this one), and you can switch to Zakk Wylde (or this one) mode via the switch.

$12/€10 and a hours work.

Those pedals are ~$99 / €99.

If you use search, you can find directions for the "mod" on this, the Marshall and Gibson forum (probably my work)

Spend some time with the amp first before you decide you need a pedal. I've never played through an OR-15, but if the demos are anything to go by, it doesn't really "do" clean - with the gain low, it's already in classic rock territory and it just gets dirtier from there.

I'm planning on setting it pretty clean and run an overdrive pedal for my basic overdriven sound (crunchy, kind of low gainy - "wide", if that makes sense).

Spend some time with the amp first before you decide you need a pedal. I've never played through an OR-15, but if the demos are anything to go by, it doesn't really "do" clean - with the gain low, it's already in classic rock territory and it just gets dirtier from there.

Well, I'm not after crystal clear clean tones, and I will probably have the amp in my possession for 1-2 months before I go shopping for an overdrive pedal.
I'm running lower-output pups too, P90s and such. The overdrive pedal would be used to give it a bit more oomph when needed.
But again, we'll see after I've actually bought the amp and played it for a month or two. Just trying to get a good view of the OD jungle atm.

I love my buddy AJ's new amp. It's a Vox Night Train we got from Trevorus. AJ put NOS GE 12ax7's in it and it made all the difference in the world! And he uses it with a pair of Jensen C10Q's I wired for 16 ohms. It's just plain great! I'd love to own that combo myself. I had it for about a week when AJ was out of town and grew to love it.

For crunchy, "cranked overdrive pedal through a Marshall" tones that Crunch Box pedal sounds pretty good to me although it's not a tone I would ever use for my own playing. I don't want to sound like Zakk Wylde...I'd rather sound like me or Robben Ford.

Through AJ's amp, we tried my TS808, Rat, and King of Tone. Also a borrowed Wampler Ecstasy and AJ's own Power Screamer (a boutique Tubescreamer pedal).

I thought the Wampler was warm, textured and singing and just about perfect with that Night Train. The TS808 and Power Screamer also seemed very well voiced for the Night Train.

I have some great amps but none that sound like that!

For reference for my sound, I'm very inspired by japanese band The Pillows and their lead guitarist Yoshiaki Manabe.

He's running his guitar through a late 70's Orange OD120 (set cleanish) and Boss Bluesdriver (the main sound of the song). For solo boost he's using a ProCo Rat (and occationally in other songs a russian Big Muff).
Not trying to emulate his sound, but he's the reason I'm into the Orange amps and I'm looking for my own sound in the same ball park, so to speak. Guitar straight into amp, the OR15 gives me the sound I want both with the low gain cleanish setting and the slightly higher gain crunchy setting (the OR50 is even more awesomely spot on what I want, but costs more than twice as much - it's further into the future for me, but a sure buy when the day comes).

For that, the MXR m-133 does a great job. Around $80 USD in the USA. And BTW, the need for true bypass is grossly over-stated unless there is a long "string" of pedals.

Yeah, I guess I've just been too influenced by too many internet preachers when it comes to that. I'll try and put together a list of pedals to check out.
Fulltone OCD, the MXR's that's been mentioned, Boss Bluesdriver and a few more.
