Overdrive pedals for metal?

Am getting a boss ds2 for rock and grunge tones.
But I really want a good metal distortion petal.
I am currently considering :
Mxr fullbore metal
Mesa boogie throttle box
Electro harmonics metal muff
Are any of those any good? If not could I have some suggestions? No tone in particular, but just a solid heavy, metal tone.

If your budget will allow it I would go with:

MXR/EVH 5150

Wampler Dracarys

Keeley Filaments

KHDK Dark Blood

JHS Angry Charlie (Modded JCM 800 sound)

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

The KHDK Ghoul Screamer may do well for you. The Dark Blood is more like a straight up distortion pedal.

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

Looking for an Overdrive or Distortion pedal? ;)

EHX Metal Muff is a great pedal you should be able to find very reasonably. I'd recommend the one with the built in Boost–nice way to switch from Rhythm to Lead using the same pedal.

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

Please define Metal.

I love my Metal Muff w/ Top Boost

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

Best metal pedal I've came across is the Biyang Metal End King (there is a regular version too, but the King has better capacitors and so on and it's prefered to go for the King version). It's far from an expensive pedal, but don't let the price fool you! It dishes out the best and most brutal metal sounds and simply crushes most of the more expensive competition in my opinion.
If you can find one, it's highly recommended!!

The SD Palladium would be a good choice too. It sounds like you are looking for something that will give you all the distortion through a clean amp, right?

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

if you're doing an overdrive, one usually cranks the amp to get into metal territory and then use the overdrive to push it even more and tone shape -- or use a distortion pedal (like your ds-1), turn down the gain and turn up the volume to use it like an overdrive pedal.

But for a clean amp, the above recommendations are good. I've used a Biyang before, its pretty good amp in a box

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

Depends on type of metal, old school metal you have heaps of choices from modded plexi sounds to early mesa and that van Halen 5150 tone.. For modern stuff the keeley filaments and the wampler dracaryus (however it is spelt) seem like good choices. Amp choice is going to effect how these pedals work. Also the throttle box does seem worthy too and there is the wampler triple wreck for that older rectifier sound. For me metal ranges from early Judas priest and maiden up to deathcore and djent which are completely different tones.

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

The Palladium is like adding another channel to your amp that has better EQ than most amps. Check out the details.
I think the same of the old Twin Tube Mayhem. I ab it with the gain channel on my SS Randall head; the Randall sounds good, the TT Mayhem sounds like a tube Randall, or at least close.

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

Depends on type of metal

That is why I like the Decibel 11 Dirt Clod. It has very malleable EG. They great thing about it is is has switchable diode-to-ground overdrive and an 808 chip. I can take it from classic metal all the way to very modern tones. The great thing about the pedal is the signal path is 100% analog however it has digital/midi switching and preset saving.

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

There are so many good ones out there.
The Mesa Throttle box is a pretty badass pedal. I had one and it's kinda close to the sound of a real Mesa amp.
The Krank Distortus Maximus is a seriously badass pedal that you can dial in Mild to wild Gain setting for Metal to Death Metal. It's a brutal pedal and sounds a lot like their amps. I feel it's a bit closer to the amp sound then the Mesa pedal is. But both pedals are damn good if you don't have a high gain amp.
A great foundation for distortion pedals is Fender. Fender Twin reverbs and such have a beautiful clean sound like no other. This allows pedals as such to shine to their best. You will have amazingly clear cleans and brutal sounding Drive. It's the way I would go if I didn't have a High gain amp.

Re: Overdrive pedals for metal?

Just don't do the Fullbore Metal. I tried it briefly and hated every second of it. I think the Metal Muff is a much, much better choice, and a new one is cheaper.

Agreed 100%
I had this one and a Rev20 (jr) at the same time. It's a very organic pedal for a full-blown distortion unit,,,especially at it's price.
Probably dirt-cheap used.
Krankshaft Overdrive is also a unique boosting model (in tone, not layout),,,,,,,,waaay different flavor than the typical screamer-clones.
My only gripe with their pedals is the knobs falling off lol. Easy fix though.

I never got my hands of a crankshaft but would like to try one out. I'll have to look for one.
I have a Revolution 1 2 x 12 combo. I've had it since new from 2006. It's an awesome amp.
