overdrive pedals

Re: overdrive pedals

The Fulltone OCD and Ibanez Tubescreamer are two that I highly recommend, and use myself. I leave the OCD all the time in my live rig and roll down the guitar volume to clean up. The Tubescreamer I use mostly at home and rehearsals but have used it at a gig. I like the OCD a little more for what I need it to do.

Re: overdrive pedals

Maxon OD-808 (Tube Screamer) & a Violet Ram's Head or a clone of one. Should suit your needs for most stuff independently & you can get some pretty amazing dirt out of the two by stacking!!!

Re: overdrive pedals

805 Overdrive is like a Tube Screamer with an active three band EQ. Very versatile!

Re: overdrive pedals

Hardwire CM-2 od and the SC-2 Distortion...should cover most....
And the have adjustable top and bottom, plus switches for two different kind of sounds...sadly the trigger happy Digitech company stopped making them....but getting them used should be no problem!

I have to say, once you get used to 3 band active eq, the 2 band, or worse, single passive tone knob, just won't do.

Re: overdrive pedals

hi,guys
looking for top picks when it comes to overdrive pedals, i play a strat using three single coils, fender CS-69's neck/middle seymour duncan SSL5 bridge, my amp is a 70's hiwatt DR504/ 50 watt head that i run clean and use pedal for dirt, and my music style more blues rock, e.g. Gilmour/SRV/Clapton/ gun+roses/Billy Gibbons/Santana/Gary Moore/ what overdrive pedals would you guys recommend for me to try? i value what you guys say, price no problem

thanks again for your time,
bluesfloyd,

Well AFAIK, Santana and Clapton both use the ProCo Rat. It's more a distortion pedal than true overdrive, and the vintage 80s examples are easily $300 pedals, though you can buy a more recent reissue or the Rat 2 for much less.

Billy Gibbons uses a boutique 2-channel overdrive, the Blackstone Mosfet. Only example price I can find is about $190 used on the Bay. Very versatile pedal, but I think in that class of overdrive, a Fulldrive 2 would probably get you what you wanted for about half the price, and with easier access to the controls (the Blackstone's gain and level pots are recessed in and best adjusted using your pick; one way to do it I guess). One issue with Mosfet pedals is that they like a direct input from your guitar, so they need to go very early if not first in your chain.

Tubescreamers based on the Ibanez TS-808 and Maxon 808 (there's considerable debate over which is the "original" TS) are the bread and butter of many a guitarist. The tone of a standard TS circuit is dirty blues to classic rock, right up your alley. Personally, I like the Hardwire CM-2, which is now out of production but a very versatile two-voiced overdrive ("classic" for basic crunched drive and "modified" for higher-gain hair, with two-band tone controls), and reasonably priced new (even more so now that they change hands at around $50-$60 used). It has a charge pump to boost the working voltage, so you can get serious crunch while not sacrificing attack or low end.

Lastly, give the EHX Soul Food a serious look. It's a very simple but very effective overdrive, smoother and sweeter than your standard green-box due to an internal charge pump that boosts working voltage, and it has a switchable buffer stage, so you can run it true bypass or buffered depending on the needs of your pedalboard. Sound-wise it's an excellent pedal, with drive levels ranging from on-the-edge expressive cleans to gain boost for pushing your amp, up into dirty blues, classic rock, funk rock and even some early metal tones. You should find a sound in it that works well for just about all of your role models.

Re: overdrive pedals

the last few times ive seen clapton he had a wah pedal, once there was a trem pedal but i havent seen him with a rat or any other overdrive in a long time. pretty sure his tone is pretty much all clapton strat with boost into tweed twins for the last bunch of tours.

the rev is a gear snob but his rig is basically a marshall jmp1 preamp into some power amps and a mojave scorpion for the less gainy stuff since the jmp1 doesnt clean up.

that said the rat is a fine box, as is the tube screamer. the blackstone is a good sounding box too but my friend who had one said it was picky about what amp/guitar you used. as i said, if i could only have one dirt box it would be timmy. it sounds musical, feels great and has a bunch of killer tones available with a twist of the knobs

Re: overdrive pedals

I like & play a lot of the same stuff as the OP, through a JMP 2204.

If money is no object, I'd recommend the Boss BD-2 or the Digitech Bad Monkey. My two favorite ODs.

But if you have to spend money.... Fulltone OCD or the Wampler Tumnus are good buys as well.

Re: overdrive pedals

My favorite pedal ever is the Way Huge Green Rhino. It's a TS with tweakable mids and bass and more gain. Sounds great stacked with everything I've put it in front of. I'm running it with a USA Strat with Texas Specials and an old LP/SG with PAFs into an early Silverface Super Reverb.

Re: overdrive pedals

VFE ice-scream is my overall favorite (tried about 1% of those on the market lol) booster to front-end a high-gainer. (as long as I'm plugged-in with it)

It's kind of like an old Ibby super-tubescreamer mated with a VFE focus-boost.
(adjustable pushed-mid-center and complete filtering control over the top and bottom, plus a standard active tone that has an internally adjustable corner-frequency)

For an ease-of-use portable I grab the OD9+ because it's tougher and more versatile than the 808, and a 9v swap takes all of about 5 seconds.
And then there are times when I just swear by that old trusty od808!

Re: overdrive pedals

I have been using the Decibel 11 Dirt Clod for about a year now with great results. It has an analog path but digital switching, pretty cool. It is midi and allows you to have up to internal 10 presets. Or you can program it to have two presets (or 3 or 4) so you can have your favorite dirt tone and the second version of that might have a bit more output or distortion for a boost. The great thing is it gives you two distinct overdrive circuits so you can go ground to diode ala an MXR Dist +/DOD 250 or 808 chip and dial in the tube driver tones. I have used as a green box to goose the 800 settings on my Marshall or used it for my primary dirt when playing high gain. Very versatile and very nicely priced. The form factor is smaller than it looks in the picture.

How could I not have seen that before?! Thanks for sharing it. Sounds like a great idea.
