For harder tones do you prefer using a dirty amp with an overdrive or a cleaner amp with a distortion pedal? Also, if you are a pedal user, post what you are currently using to get your sound.

Right now, I'm just using my Marshall's lead channel instead of a pedal, but I plan to try an 808 when I get a combo for a Tele.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

Overdriving an already dirty amp is what I usually do if the amp in question doesn't have the necessary gain and compression for ultra smooth legato runs.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

Overdrive -> dirty, although truth be told I do like even a "distorion" [sic] pedal dialed back into a smokin' dirty channel for sheer bombastic brutality....

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

I've personally always liked the sound of an overdrive pedal more than a distortion pedal, just like I prefer to use delay instead reverb.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

I use a Distortion pedal at a mid-gain kind of setting to push a dirty amp.

I also use a tubescreamer.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

three channel high gain tube preamp for me. No dirt pedals needed. :)

Volume is always an issue ...

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

It depends greatly on the amp. With my amp, a two channel tube combo, I use the dirty channel with for a crunchy, light OD, sound. And when I need to kick it up to 11 i switch on the Bad Monkey.

But if I had a good single channel Fender I would run it clean with 2 overdrives, or maybe one over drive and a fuzz or distortion (Big Muff?).

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

I prefer an Overdrive infront of a Well-Driven amp.
I like the drive sound of the amp.The OD is just to tighten up there ,and push the harmonic content

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

I like an amp that has a great sounding overdrive channel. That's what I rely on most for distorted rhythm and lead tones.

I like to have fun with pedals once in a while too.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

Fender clean with a keeley modded DS-1 and a TS9. So both distortion and od into a clean amp.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

I prefer to use a clean tube amp, with a distortion pedal out front. That way I don't depend on the amp, and any clean amp will do. Of course it has to be a good pedal -- not necessarily expensive, but it has to be good.

Amps are expensive, the tubes go bad, and you may get a different one someday. It's nice to be able to keep most of the tone coming from the pickups and pedals. Pickups and pedals are generally both cheaper and more reliable than an amp.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

Overdrive into a fat, but not filthy, tube amp (with no master volume control of course, turn the bleedin' amp up...). Distortion = compression, which is the enemy of my agression. And aggresion is the real rock sound that will nail people to the back wall, not that great pile of tizzy fuzzy distortion that people think sounds so huge in their bedrooms. Yeah, i'm a dinosaur and proud of it.

I use the same old Boss overdrive pedal i have for over 20 years. I've tweaked it along the way. It ain't about the pedals. If ya wanna sound mean, play mean. I remember back in the eighties, all the little girly-boy, big-haired, pointy-guitar wielding sissies waving their puny little fists at me in video clips and music magazine advertising. I used to want to step in to those scenes and tear their girly heads right off their spandex-clad little bodies. Around that time, i saw a clip of the reformed Johhny Kidd and The Pirates, featuring Mick Green on guitar. They were an old English rock institution, and were probably well into their forties then. Mick Green was a huge influence on many of the older British guitar legends. Now....these guys were truly frightening.....just huuuuge raw sounding rock....i met a guy who played drums for them once and told him how i found them truly intimidating, and he told me that, yeah, they were....in rreal life, when they weren't playing, they would be house-breaking (English term for robbing people's homes). In other words, they were the real deal. No pretending, no hiding.

So i learnt along the way, through playing and from doing live FOH sound engineering.....the more distorted someone sounds on stage, the less it projects out the front, it just compresses and sucks back and can't get forward in the mix no matter how many thousands of watts of PA reinforcement they are given.

Basically, ya gotta play with yer balls hanging out. Tear the stinking frets off yer guitar until yer fingers bleed. If i see one more fairy-fingered tw@ trying to be aggressive but tickling the fretboard with the lowest action known to man and a doctorate in distortion devices snarling in my direction, i will pull either their, or my own, skull clean out of their/my head and play soccer with it in the street.

Byaaaarrgh, ! **** the pansies !!! Ya gotta feel the veins in yer teeth, son !!!

edit : i'm not advocating becoming a criminal to get a more ballsy sound, hehe.

Re: Overdrive vs. Distorion Poll

I think certain distortion pedals DS-1 (much better modded), RAT etc give their own 'hard' sound that isn't possible out of some of amps (AC30 type el84's, clean fenders etc). Especially for a hard edged rythmn. Amps give a sound pedals can't touch when the amp is around breaking point or just past.

I can't tell if this post is serious or not :laugh2:

I use a low action, play with jumbo frets and use high gain, I must be a pansy then :laugh2:
