P-90 question

I recently decided to keep an Elitist SG that I was planning on selling, I think I want to try some P-90's in it. I keep hearing that the P-90's made for a humbucker route don't sound exactly like an actual P-90, close but not the same. I am wondering why Duncan, Gibson, Dimarzio etc. doesn't use the same P-90 pickup and put a wider ring to cover the humbucker route? If that is what they do why would the pickup sound different? Sorry if this is a stupid question but it seems all the manufacturers have pickups that are "almost P-90's", it seems like they could solve the problem with a little more plastic. I am assuming it is a marketing thing.

Re: P-90 question

The Phat Cats ARE P-90's in a humbucker size as are Rio Grande's Bastard and Fat Bastard pickups.

Re: P-90 question

I think the p90 bobins don't perfectly fit. Don't forget the legs on HB spaced pickups. ;)

For one thing, I have heard people say that PhatCats are quite good for the p90 tone. Those who were saying that they are not right on actually agree with the first sentence. As far as I see the difference is due to a2's which PhatCats have, and the metal cover (might change the tone).

I have a phatcat bridge and 2 lollar p90s. Of course I cannot compare them on the same guitar. But I kind of like the phatcat on the bridge of my 95LP standard more. It might be of course be the guitar. I dunno.

Re: P-90 question

Zhang,

I've been itching for this tapped custom phatcat bridge we've talked about. Remember? Tapped to be 7.50K and 9.00K or up to get some kinda tele tone and thick PAFish p90 tone from my LP.

I've been checking out the used ones but no luck yet.

I do remember. Send one to me and I'll rewind it for ya -- with tap and total coil specs exactly where you want.

Re: P-90 question

Who knows why they don't...baseplate, cover, coil size, size of magnetic field...but they might be close enough.

Re: P-90 question

Any difference in sound from Phat Cat to a real P90 probably has more to do with the fact that it's mounted in a humbucker ring rather than mounted directly to the wood, and the metal cover may take away just a slight bit of treble/presence. That said, I don't think there's much of a difference.

Is it possible to remove the cover?

You can, but it looks like dog poop, like a P90 without a cover would. I think the Phat Cats sound just fine with the cover on anyway.

Plus you can always replace the Alnico 2's in it with Alnico 5's if you want to totally nail the sound.
