P-90's on a strat?

Do people do this? I currently have an american Strat and I want to put some stronger pickups in it. If i dont do that, i might just buy me a 2nd guitar with humbuckers or Soapbars.

Re: P-90's on a strat?

if you don't have a swimming pool route you'll have to open up the humbucker routes. P-90's are wider than humbuckers are.

Re: P-90's on a strat?

...before you do all that work, have you tried a beefier single coil (or maybe an sc sized bucker)?

Re: P-90's on a strat?

There's always the humbucker sized p-90 option. That is by far the easiest.

Re: P-90's on a strat?

There was that mahog p-90 strat a while back....kinda SG stained with a black headstock.

The fattest single coil (regular strat) just doen't have the fat of a good p-90. IMO. Then again, I don't do singles so my opinion here is weak.

I think Stevie ray was actually striving for the tone of a P-90.

Re: P-90's on a strat?

you don't get 'bell' tones from a p-90 because it's a bar magnet. i hear a lot of 'bell' in stevie's attack sound. you might want to go for a beefier single coil that still uses rod magnets otherwise you might as well not be using a strat at all

Re: P-90's on a strat?

Nobody that I know of makes a P90 in a single coil housing...

The Quarter Pounder gets close to that vibe... but not "it". Not by a stretch... but it's the best option short of putting a full size or bucker sized P90 in there.

I don't know WHY Duncan or someone hasn't made one yet... P90 in a single coil... for both strat & tele bridge!!!

Re: P-90's on a strat?

I'm actually thinking of dropping a Phat Cat in my Fender Strat...it has 60's single coils in the other positions and while i love the Custom Custom bridge, it's just a little too hot with those old pickups. That's what I think would be easiest -- just get a basic Fat Strat pickguard (online is cheap, guitar center is convenient) and a Phat Cat...or better yet a P-Rails for more options.

Re: P-90's on a strat?

I am building a USA Strat project, with a HB routing at the bridge. In my case, I am using Seymour Duncan Strat stacks at the neck & middle with a HB-sized P90-type pup from another company at the bridge ( am I allowed to say that here ? shhhh ) Anyway, All my other guitars have Seymour Duncans, so maybe I can be forgiven once. As above mentioned, this is akin to putting a Phat Cat at the bridge, which would be the proper, decent, loyal way to do it.

I'm going to be putting Phat Cats in my Mexi Strat when I get it finished. If you want to wait a couple of months I can tell you how it turns out. :D

Re: P-90's on a strat?

LewGuiatar thinks the Phat Cats sound better than P90's, so thats a good reccomendation right there.

I saw the Waitresses a couple times back in the 80's. Their guitar player had one of the best live tones I had ever heard. He was playing a Strat with three mini-humbuckers in it. I think they were Firebird pickups, but I'm not positive - might have been LP Deluxe types. Very cool axe.

Re: P-90's on a strat?

Simon Townshend's has been using an old American Standard strat with 2 P90's in it for years... he's used it on stage with The Who for the last 6 years... Pete even used it a few times...

Re: P-90's on a strat?

Some people say the Dimarzio SDS-1's are supposed to be like P-90's. They're bar magnets, and sound incredibly full. A little too dark & full to my ears... I have to adjust the EQ quite a bit to balance them (then again I like bright). Anyway, the point here is that they're sc sized, and may do the trick for you.
