I suspect that the smartest compromise for obtaining a bunch of classic bass guitar tones from a single American-made instrument would be an EBMM Sterling or Stingray HS model.

I love my p bass and have learned to tolerate the Jazz, but the Stingray is a complete beast.

The bass player on my other band has a Sterling and to be honest they have never really appealed to me. I know the build quality is awesome but I much preferred my Sandberg Ken Taylor to his. To be fair I think it's that I'm getting on a bit and coz I'm playing in a blues rock trio I just prefer having something that sounds and looks like a basses I send on most of the tracks we cover. On that note don't give me any GAS for more basses as this band is just a side project until my other band gets back to gigging.

My bassist has a 5 string Bongo, which sounds like a piano. Lots of people hate the looks, but I kinda like it.

Regarding the active versus passive aspect of this thread, I have no overwhelming preference one way or the other. (Whichever fits the music I happen to be working on today.)

For me the greatest distinction is not active v. passive but blade polepiece v. rod magnets. SD Lightnin' Rod and EMG-JV pickups sound more convincingly "Fender" to me than, say, DiMarzio Split P or Bartolini 8S pickups.
