P90 to humbucker conversion

Will a humbucker and a pickup ring cover the P90 routing by chance?
I've been checking out the new Gibson SG Junior, and I want to swap an Iommi pup in place of the P90, but I dont know if it will totally cover up the routing or not.

Does anyone have any experience with this? If so, can you please share any thoughts or ideas for a solution to this problem?

Thank ya much

Re: P90 to humbucker conversion

Yea I understand that, and I'm ok with with that part, but I was just trying to hide it with a mounting ring.

Maybe I can route a humbucker cavity out really nice, but slightly larger, and make it a direct mount pup instead.
That might be a viable alternative to my problem actually.
Thanks for replying, you actually lead me to the conclusion that I just posted.:)

Re: P90 to humbucker conversion

The fastening screw holes for the dogear cover may lay outside the edges of the HB mounting ring.

TV Jones Filter'Tron and Rickenbacker style replacement pickups will fit into the P90 cavity without additional routing. So would a Seymour Duncan custom shop JB90. I have only ever seen these in soapbar format but it ought to be possible to order one in dogear format.

Re: P90 to humbucker conversion

Thank you for the reply sir, I do appreciate that very much.

A P90 version of the Seymour Duncan TI1B would be bad ass, I do know that. I know that Iommi didnt use that, but it just got me thinking about P90 conversions in general.

I don't like the pickguard of the SG Junior, so perhaps an SG Standard style cut for 1 humbucker would be another alternative as well.
I also dont like that stop tailpiece, so I'm thinking a Kahler 3300 fixed or a Kahler 7330 fixed would be a nice upgrade for this.
But thats another issue there; I dont think the Kahler base would entirely cover up the post holes.

I'm basically trying to figure a way to mod this without a re-finish. the issues I'm facing aren't a problem otherwise. I'd love to be able to do the mods mentioned without too much hacking, and for them to appear to be factory and undetectable otherwise.
I'm just doing some homework/ drawing board type of things before I decide to pull the trigger on the SG Junior.

Thank you guys for your help.

Re: P90 to humbucker conversion

If you want to change the pickup type which would involve routing, and the bridge type (probably involving wood modification too) it sounds most likely that this guitar isn't for you.
Best to sell and get what you really want for these type of changes.

Re: P90 to humbucker conversion

Try a SD P90 Custom before you get out the router. There are also some good P90 sized humbuckers too from Dimarzio and Rio Grande.
