P90 vs. strat/tele SC

Re: P90 vs. strat/tele SC

Howdy,

Big P-90 fan here. I've got a Hum DeBugger pedal which takes some of the sting out of 60 cycle hum when playing around fluorescent lights, dimmer switches. It helps.

Re: P90 vs. strat/tele SC

P90's are much hotter IME. They have significantly more wire on the coil, so they tend to have smoother highs and more prominent mids. They are powered by two big magnets (the same kind used in humbuckers, but two of them), and they have a brass baseplate, so they are plenty strong.

The Dimarzio SDS-1 is a very good P90 in Strat size, especially if you use an amp with plenty of headroom. Even better are the Fralin SP-42's (or SP-43's if you want them hotter), but they are pricey.

Now you've got me wondering what a P90 with two ceramics (or maybe one ceramic and one A8 to fill I'm the mids and roll off the high end a bit) would sound like.

See above, re: SDS-1.
