P90's in Stratocaster?

Re: P90's in Stratocaster?

i put in some kent armstrong p-90s. the bridge was pretty badass, the neck was kinda dull. definately not stratty at all. i have since re-installed my single coils.

Re: P90's in Stratocaster?

Many Strats are great with p90s- Just recognize it will be a relatively bright, not quite teletangy sound-

The main sound you loose is the midpup quack, but if you keep it, you can stay very strat like-

The p90 breidge can be very tele like or a little more hollowish (think epis)- Necks can sometimes be very LPjrish- They are closer to the neck which offsets some of the 25.5 and non-mahogany brightness-

Re: P90's in Stratocaster?

Thanks Zion. I was planning on putting a P90 in the neck position, so if it comes close to a LP JR I would be very happy.

Re: P90's in Stratocaster?

well remember i said it can be! lots depends on the wind and the wood, so keep that in mind on the Tele-LPjr scale-

Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

Re: P90's in Stratocaster?

Rosewood goes towords warm, popalar and especially maple push towords bright- But afterall it's a strat so nothign new here-

I would go at least slightly overwound- This keep highs under control and honestly, I don't ever think of really clean LPjrsounds- I would have at least a little 'dirt' in there, so this should be a good fit-

It woudl be kind of hard to really muddy this up because the 25.5 scale snap, should keep it relateively articulate, so if you like more dirt, more winds probalby wouldn't hurt.

This would leave you the bridge for cleaner or fenderish sounds?

I love imagining for other people becuase it's low cost:)

Re: P90's in Stratocaster?

i have seen PETE TOWNSHEND WITH a strat with p90s but i remember "in the day" he played an sg with p90s. My opinion, he's a GIBSON man
If you really want to do "the p90 sound/gibson-in-fender-clothing" the Black DoveII Stratocaster is the way to go because you get the gibson scale, top mounted bridge and the p-90s all ready to go and if the pickups are too mellow go with seymour duncanized p90s
