Packing a Rob Keeley DS-1 Ultra now, plus apologies to ModestCargo.

Funny thing happened around the time I got my Legacy back from being fixed... the day I got it back I drove from my house to the Carvin factory in San Diego, then back to my place for practice. I didn't want to rewire the whole **** rig up with the loop and everything cuz i was being lazy, I stuck a stock DS-1 in the signal chain in my pedalboard, rewired it for a series chain, and let 'er rip.

A few weeks earlier I'd gotten this DS-1 from Closed Eye just on a whim... total impulse buy. That plus I'd compared DS-1s to the MD-2 Mega Distortion I WAS using with a rental amp while my Carvin was out and I liked the DS-1s tonality better overall.

As it turned out, the DS-1 sounded surprisingly good with just a few setting adjustments once wired in... the band immediately noticed the difference and liked the sound a lot better... more treble edge, more Marshally mids and a browner sound overall. Granted I had to floor the pedal's volume and back off the tone quite a bit to do this, but the result was pretty good!! The basic tone was there.

So since November I've been using the DS-1 as my main distortion source, into a clean Legacy with the Fulltone OCD for boosts. Everyone who sees me play live regularly has said they've noticed an improvement in the sound overall. Personally I'd been missing the deep low end and dynamics i got from the amp's actual overdrive channel... not a huge difference to the listener but it was there and I noticed it a lot.

Enter the Rob Keeley DS-1 Ultra. This pedal sounds KILLER... all my low end grind, sweet sustain, and dynamics are back in spades!! Part of the reason I like my OCD so much is that it sounds and responds like the crunch channel of an AMP and not a pedal. The Keeley DS-1 behaves like this as well... it reacts very much like a floored British tube amp does. It sounds awesome and coupled with the OCD it makes an excellent high-gain lead tone.

I love the simplicity of this setup... i think it'll be staying this way for some time. Funny thing is I'd been scouting for a new amp recently to replace the Legacy and ModestCargo suggested i get a killer one-channel amp and do all my drive with my pedals. My response was that I need the 2nd channel of the amp for my main distortion sound and then using my OCD as the solo booster. But now that I've found a way to get great gainy sounds from two very great pedals, I think I'll be going the way ModestCargo suggested anyway!!

The moral of the story: The Keeley DS-1 is awesome if you like the basic sound your DS-1 has but want more tone, volume, range, dynamics, and chunk in the sound. That, and never underestimate what a combination of two boutique pedals can do. :D

I'm sure we'll get differing opinions on this, but a good single-channel amp is the way to go. I think channel-switchers that sound good on all channels are extremely rare. My personal MO is to use an amp that sounds good for crunch and cleans up when I roll back the guitar volume. Then for more overdrive, add a box in front. That way, if your taste is OD/distortion changes, you're swapping out a box instead of the whole freaking amp.

The other great thing is, it's scalable. My little 18 Watter works great for a lot of stuff, but if I ever needed to do a bigger gig (Heaven forbid), the setup would work pretty much the same way with an Edana or a 50-watt Marshall. The pedalboard would be the same, and I never have to deal with an amp's proprietary footwswitch.

I agree with you that the Keeley Ultra is a huge improvement over the stock DS-1. YMMV, but I think Monte Allums Recto Mod is even better. My personal choice for dirt-generating is a modded SD-1, but I'm keeping the DS-1 Recto around for times whwen I need a heavier grind.

i've been wanting to try a modded DS1 for ages... i use stock ones a fair bit and always wish i had a little better low end!

If you own more than one DS-1, there is no reason in the world NOT to mod one. Keeley's Ultra mod is published oin the web, and Monte Allums kits are cheap. Old-style Boss pedals like the DS-1 and SD-1 are about the easiest things in the world to solder on.

over the Xmas holidays the local shop was selling new DS1's for $49.... oneday i should grab one and mod it....

My local shop was the same - great huge piles of DS-1's for $34.95. If you have the patience for eBay, they can be had for less than $20 in perfect shape. Kids have no idea you can MOD pedals buy them at GC, discover they sound all thin & buzzy, and then sell them.

I was probably gonna let the stock one I have go... no reason to keep it around anymore. Want it for $25 shipped? That's what I bought it for.

I bought it from Closed Eye, and this is a particularly good-sounding one, too.

Oh yes indeed they are great. I have a modded DS-1 that I keep around when I want a real Marshally tone. I actually prefer it over my Crunch Box. I'm sure some MI Audio lovers would consider me a blasphemer, but I like the sounds of a modded DS-1.

I love how my DS-1 sounds now. It went through a ton of changes. I finally ended up discovering a sickenly good mod that's all of 5 part changes. It's an absolute monster after those changes. When things get better for us financially, I'd like to get another one to mess with or even put in another enclosure with a boost after it and a 3-band EQ.

What did you do to yours?

Re: Packing a Rob Keeley DS-1 Ultra now, plus apologies to ModestCargo.

I might have to put my money where your mouth is, grab a cheap DS-1, change your magical 5 parts, and A/B it with my Allums Recto.

Re: Packing a Rob Keeley DS-1 Ultra now, plus apologies to ModestCargo.

Sometimes I think too much....lol. The five changes that work best for me are at the bottom of my mods page, after everything else that was done. If want to read the adventures of it all, feel free.

Strangely enough the first thing I noticed when I clicked on your page was the fretboard and the shape of the frets... I've only seen frets that shape on a Suhr, actually.

That's just a theme for the CMS software I use that I found. It was the best one for me out of all the ones I looked at.

Shipping to Canada is a bit more expensinve, but I'll do it for $5 USD extra. That'd be $30 shipped total.

I thought you did that already, at least tried the mod out, just not the A/B comparison.

Re: Packing a Rob Keeley DS-1 Ultra now, plus apologies to ModestCargo.

Come to think of it, I think my DS-1 is the Allums Recto mod, but with your diode section, so maybe I won't bother.
